About the Author
John James is an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Glasgow and a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. He is the author of Student's Guide to Fourier Transforms, also published by Cambridge University Press, now in its second edition.

Excellent Analytical Presentations of Spectrographic Techniques

The book is an excellent detailed overview of the optical issues associated with spectrograph design. The book provides detailed analysis of all of the key factors using a substantial level of mathematical detail. The books details lenses, focusing, aberrations, gratings, and all of the elements used in a spectrograph. The text presents the details for designing as well as the details for determining performance issues. Issues related to accuracy and calibration are covered.
The mathematical detail is not overly complex but it is complete and readily useable. The graphics are quite clear and cover in detail all of the explanations.
This however is not a practical design book nor is it in any way an applications book. It assumes a familiarity with the specific application. The analysis for the most part relates to design and not to applications.
Overall this is an ideal text to have when doing various spectrographic work. It is a very worthwhile addition.
