Modern, Clear and Helpful Horary Handbook

Horary astrology has had a resurgence in popularity, and it is not hard to see why. In our age of overwhelming choices and too much information to sift through, sometimes we just want an answer to a specific question. This is where horary can shine. In this book, the author gives you the tools that you need to be able to create a horary chart and interpret it. She has a clear, concise, and sensible approach to teaching horary that is refreshing and makes the subject matter accessible to most readers who have a moderate understanding of astrology. I like it that she offers many sample charts along with her interpretations, illustrating the techniques and the principles that she carefully outlines. The book is well thought out, and in Chapter 6, and in Appendix B where she offers a "Horary Cheat Sheet" she directs the student to the relevant chart features that should be examined, namely Significators, Aspects, the Moon, and Extras (SAME) while guiding us through a working process to arrive at an interpretation. It is helpful to have an understanding of dignities and debilities, receptions, and the proper assignment of houses to the question being asked, but if you follow the process laid out here, you will be able to interpret most charts with good accuracy. And isn't that what we want from a handbook?

This book demystifies horary in a way that is most helpful. The author says: "Ultimately, querents don't know
or care about which technique is being applied to their charts or who William Lilly was. They only care about an accurate answer to their question. They want to know if they will get the job, not which terms and face Venus is in." Yes, and the student of horary wants to know which of the myriad of factors shown in the chart are most important, how to logically and systematically read the relationships and how conclusive the evidence is for the answer. I like it that she spells out the relationships in a logical fashion. One example:

"The basic formula for horary analysis at its simplest is this: What's strong (dignified), what's weak (debilitated), how does it relate (reception) and act (aspects) and in what arena (house)?" If you follow the directions laid out, you will be able to use this method to come to a conclusion you can have confidence in.

This book would be of use and interest to the moderately astrologically informed reader. I have read Lilly, Frawley, Barclay and other horary astrologers, as well as various online amateur interpreters of horary, and I have to admit that one of the other features of this work that I like is the sensibility of the writer. We live in an age where far too often we seek advice from professionals or from astrology to confirm our wishes, rather than truly facing facts that are unpleasant. She does not encourage the astrologer to enter into a co-dependent relationship with the inquirer, but to address the chart on its own merits and to be truthful rather than consoling or falsely reassuring. I think this is honest and fair to the querent.

If you have doubts about the legitimacy of astrology, of course you will probably not want this book. If you disagree with modern horary interpretation because you prefer to only use traditional planets as rulers, you won't like this book. If you are open minded, though, and want to learn how to use a more streamlined method to interpret horary charts, this book is a gem - as I said in my title, it's modern, clear, and helpful.

As Dr. Seuss said, "Say what you mean and mean what you say, those who matter won't mind, and those who mind don't matter." Thanks for the worthwhile addition to the modern literature on horary!

MY BEST BOOK ON HORARY WITHOUT ADOUBT !

There is very little I can add to the recommendation of Susan Little as I TOTALLY AGREE with her review100%.
I kept looking for all kinds of exceptions to the authors writings and I simply could not find any .The author's method is simple, straight forward and easy to comprehend on a subject that has been too confusing for too too long
I have a very large library on Horary, been part of a group study on the subject for a number of years, tried all kinds of very often confusing, convoluted theories on both ancient and so called modern rules and practices and I believe after having gone into the subject deeply for a VERY long time that if you want to SIMPLIFY your life and just get on with the subject of working with Horary and not confuse yourself, THIS book is your way OUT of the 'fog'...
Just buy the book folks. You won't be sorry.

“Limping On Water” is the story of a remarkable man, Phil Beuth, and his equally estimable career. It chronicles his 40-year love affair with Capital Cities Communications. Beuth was Cap Cities’ first employee, hired by founder Tom Murphy. And before Beuth retired, he became President of Early Morning and Late Night for ABC TV.
It’s rare that a personal story can adequately serve as a history of a company – but because the company concentrated on people - Beuth’s humble and evocative memoir comes close.
“Cap Cities” by common consent became “one of the world’s premier media conglomerates, a company heralded for its … brilliant stewardship” and principled behavior. In fact, Tom Murphy, its founder, concluded his address to the Harvard Business Graduating class of 1985 by telling them, “Avoid anything ethically questionable. You will lose more than you could ever gain.”
No less than Warren Buffett called the company the “gold standard for ethical corporate behavior.”
Beuth’s limp, which derived from his cerebral palsy, became an outward marker of his incredible inner determination and achievement. That grit – and an unsurpassed talent in assessing people and situations – kept him at the top of the mark in the “Mad Men” golden era of television.”
The author’s physical debility figures in the title, “Limping On Water.”
Beuth’s capacity for his leadership came about as an insiders’ joke. Years ago, Sev Severino, the ABC Los Angeles boss, was kidding about the largesse of Phil’s boss at Cap Cities’, Tom Murphy. He gave innumerable ‘attaboys’ to Beuth and others over the years.
Sev’s response to this incessant praise was, “For Chrissakes, if you listen to Murphy, you’d think Phlly Beuth limped on water.”
Nobody would have predicted this future for a poor kid born in 1932 on Staten Island. Phil’s father died in an auto accident when he was just 4, and his mother had to go to work. She found employment at the Western Electric Plant in Manhattan. She left Phil and his younger brother with “her stepfather, an embittered, war-wounded veteran (of the Spanish-American War!), who ran a ramshackle “Sanford and Son” junk business out of his backyard.”
Who would have thought that this spare beginning could possibly lead Beuth, “through luck, pluck” and lots of part-time jobs to a top quality school, Union College, via scholarship?
I have a brief to file here: I’ve known Phil since his Buffalo, New York days in the 1970s, when he raised Cap Cities WKBW TV to even greater heights. I was headmaster at Nardin Academy in those years, the school from which his daughter Jane, an ebullient personality and life-long friend to my wife and myself, graduated.
Two quick stories of Phil’s Buffalo days - both encapsulating how he discovered treasure in the weeds and kept proper perspective – both equities demonstrating the qualities that enabled him to rise to the top.
- Don Polec ran a neighborhood Burger King for $8000. He was a friend of the legendary KB newsman, Irv Weinstein. Weinstein told Phil to interview his friend. Polec was shy and retiring but he had a way of seeing things differently. They talked. Beuth told him to bring him back five ideas for show segments. Polec brought back 55 the next day! Polec started at $14,700 and became the hottest feature reporter in the market.

- In 1984, the “Channel 7 Prime Timers” softball team played Mayor Jimmy Griffin’s police and fireman at the old War Memorial stadium given a facelift for Robert Redford’s film, “The Natural.” It was a Variety Club fundraiser for Children’s Hospital.

Kids in wheelchairs sat along first base with their parents. Beuth came to bat in the last half of the last inning with the score tied, 7 all, and a winning run at second base. “The Boss”, as he was called, clocked the pitch over the right fielder's head (it was he who was creeping in steadily to throw Beuth out). Channel 7 won the game as Phil made it to first. Afterward, one of the parents asked Phil to say ‘hello’ to his son in a wheelchair.

“Do you think I could ever do that?” the nine-year-old asked Beuth. It reminded Phil of his own earlier challenges. He knew he had hit a home run.
Of course there’s more to this book than the admirable Horatio Alger aspect.
For those who like stories about celebrities, there’s a score and more. Lowell Thomas, Sir Paul McCartney, Frank Sinatra, Cher, Jackie Robinson, Red Barber, Nelson Rockefeller, Barbara Walters, Sammy Davis, Jr., Burt Reynolds, Red Skelton, Muhammad Ali, and others get a chance to light up the pages of this exceptional book.
Through it all, Beuth’s success in a tough business was, as he put it, the result of “doing well and doing good.”
Beuth and his wife Mary divide their time between homes in Buffalo, NY and Naples, FL. now. Phil continues community service dealing with migrant workers’ needs in Florida, as well as serving on the Board of the Naples Press Club.

Limping on Water is an enchanting story. It is classic Phil Beuth. Though it is your personal life and career, it is also a definitive and colorful history of our beloved Capital Cities. It makes an old hand like me smile at every turn. It evokes laughter in many chapters, and sadness and some tears in those appropriate pages. I couldn’t put it down. Like other good books we have all read, I regretted that it had to end.

This is a historical literary work, of course, but it is really a love story. Between you and the company and the cast. You should take great pride in your accomplishments. And in the success of this book. I loved it, and I love you.

Improbable rise to the top!

Quite a story. I'm reading Warren Buffett's 2015 letter to shareholders. In it he recommends Phil Bueth's 'Limping on Water' which he notes will be available for purchase at his annual shareholder's meeting. I recognize the Bueth name because it's been in my Union College alumni magazine noting Bueth's generous donations to the college. Rule one of life: anything Warren Buffett writes or recommends you should generally try to get your hands on. This proposition was irresistible as I wondered what the connection was between the two.

After downloading the book to my Kindle it doesn't take long to fly through the first chapters of the book where Bueth rises from a challenging childhood on Staten Island beset by an accident that kills his father, a disease that impairs his mobility, a mother who has to move away to be closer to her work and a handicapped grandfather who raises him while tending to his livelihood - a junkyard in his backyard.

Young Phil is not deterred. His hard work and many part time jobs are noted by a friend's father who arranges a meeting with his boss who happens to be Frank Bailey, owner of his own investment bank and a major benefactor of Union College. Bailey is impressed the young man looks like a hard worker who will likely support the college teams instead of going home to a Long Island mansion as many of the current student apparently did. A series of jobs at Union (including the famous Rathskellar and a local pizza shop) lead him to a page job at a local UHF station. Bueth graduates from Union and earns a graduate degree in media from Syracuse. Tom Murphy acquires the UHF station, Phil Bueth is his first hire and Cap Cities is born. Phil takes the story from there through a series of jobs at one of the greatest business success stories of our time (and one of the best investments Warren Buffett ever made!)

Union improbably won the NCAA hockey championship in 2014. The games most valuable player was Shayne Gostisbehere a Florida native who many said was too small to play defense in the NHL. So far in his rookie season, Gostisbhere has set an NHL record for scoring points in consecutive games by a rookie defenseman (15 vs the former record of 10 held by Barry Beck.) The Ghost as he is called has also set the Philadelphia Flyers record for goals by a rookie defenseman (14 so far this season after being called up in November.) Phil was the Shayne Gostisbehere of his day!

Hlasko is the most prominent example of a writer who broke free from the Socialist-Realist formulae that dominated the literary scene in Poland since it fell under the influence of the Soviets. He made his literary debut in 1956 and immediately became a poster boy for Polish Literature. He subsequently worked at some of the most important newspapers and magazines for intellectual life in Warsaw.Hlasko was sent to Paris on an official mission in 1958, but when he published in an �migr� Parisian press his novel of life in post-War Poland, he was denied a renewal of his passport. In effect, he was called back to Poland, and when he refused to return he was stripped of his Polish citizenship. He spent the rest of his life working in exile. Marek Hlasko was a rebel whose writing and iconoclastic way of life became an inspiration to those of his generation and after. Here, in the first English translation of his literary memoir, Ross Ufberg deftly renders Hlasko’s wry and passionate voice.

He is cofounder of New Vessel Press. � Foreword author�Jaroslaw Anders has written for The New Republic, The New York Review of Books, and other publications, and is the author of Between Fire and Sleep: Sketches on Modern Polish Poetry and Prose. He has translated several books from English into Polish and from Polish into English.

Fascinating glimpse of Poland in the fifties

This book will be primarily of interest to three groups of readers: 1) people who have read Hlasko's novels, especially those that have been translated into English; 2) historians interested in the post-Stalinist period in East Central Europe; 3) Slavicists, especially Polonists. For those readers, this is a great book; its only flaws are its lack of an index and the fact that in the ebook the terms in the glossary aren't hyperlinked.

Rough and not too interesting

This book is Hlasko’s partial autobiography. Born in 1932 in Poland, he grew up in the terror and devastation of World War II and came of age in Communist Poland as designed and enforced by Stalin and his local minions. Highly sensitive and high strung, he was a born rebel, literary and artistic, and seemingly incapable of thriving in Poland of the 1950s, instead eking out an existence even as he gained some recognition for his early writings.

This book is very rough and not too interesting; it does not compare with the works of Milosz or Kosinski whom Hlasko refers to in the text. It seems his life was poisoned by the evil of the times that he grew up and lived in as a young man. He simply could not overcome this and go on to a fuller life.

Used this for a homeschool class.

I used this book with eight home school kids in high school grades. Though it has plenty of good arguments, I particularly liked the structure provided by the chapter designations: "Thinking Like A Christian About History", "Thinking Like A Christian About Law", "Thinking Like A Christian About Government", "Thinking Like A Christian About Economics." The photos in the book and the accompanying video are now quite dated due to clothing styles. I think the book was replaced rather than updated.

Much Needed Resource

Not What I Was Expecting

This book is for young adults age 18 plus. I loved the female dragon and male human relationship going but my thoughts were where were the dragons wings and why did it end like that I want more. It would have been better with no swears and more affection between them like having relation ship grow over time and not just you meet and boom. Really hope there book 2 of this dragon one.

Best for women who need encouragement

This is a superb book for women who feel out-of-touch with beauty products, colors and trends, or struggling a little with self esteem. If you look in the mirror and think, "Why bother?" or "Where do I start? What do I do?" this is the book for you.

Carmindy's advice is heavy on pep talk. It's a very positive book.

She also delivers precise, clear tips (with a product list at the back of the book) for specific issues. The question-and-answer sections -- broken into sections such as eyes, skin, etc. -- are also helpful and cover a wide range of ages, skin types, and skin tones and colors.

I'm a former model and now "of a certain age"... meaning over 50. While I have some "Where do I start?" issues, and her Q&A section answered several questions for me, this wasn't my favorite makeup book. (I highly recommend The Makeup Wakeup: Revitalizing Your Look at Any Age for anyone over 40, and certainly for 50+, 60+, and beyond.)

In "Get Positively Beautiful," I really liked Carmindy's photo illustration showing exactly what makeup she carries when she travels. I also appreciated her advice for air travel, including getting on board wearing no makeup and lots of moisturizer. (I routinely do that, knowing I don't look my best at the boarding gate.)

Carmindy's five-minute face advice was intriguing enough that I've ordered her book, The 5-Minute Face: The Quick & Easy Makeup Guide for Every Woman to learn more.

My favorite part of this book included the before & after photos. One woman in that section had my coloring and style, so I learned from it. Another had my skin type (and related issues), so I learned from what I saw there, as well.

All in all, I like this book but it didn't offer as many "ah-HA!" moments as I might have liked. "Get Positively Beautiful" is probably a great choice for any woman who's not sure about her looks or the best makeup to bring out her most attractive features. The "positively" part of the title is key: Carmindy is being very upbeat and positive when she assures readers that no one has a perfect face, and highlighting your best features can transform any (and every) woman.

(Note: I'm not suggesting that rave reviews have come from women with self-esteem issues. It's just that -- many years ago -- having spent a lot of time in a chair, having someone create a "look" for me, to fit a specific designer or show, I've heard a lot of this before. I wanted a little more from the nuts-and-bolts side of face design.)

Fans of "What Not to Wear" will practically hear Carmindy's voice in the text, and the book design is very stylish.

Carmindy didn't write this book for absolutely everyone. That's always a smart decision for an author. She's speaking to a specific audience, and doing so beautifully.

I don't regret buying this book, because I picked up some useful tips and encouragement. I think her "5-Minute Face" book is probably the one I'll enjoy more.

But, for a little of everything, a gentle introduction to your best looks, and lots of Carmindy-ish encouragement, "Get Positively Beautiful" is a good choice.

Great diversity of models, great for young people and all ages

This book is amazing! Talk about diversity. All types of skin... light to dark. African American, Asian, Latin, Caucasian and all ages from teen to 60's! All types of face shapes and features. The models are just every day people like us. It is well written, down to earth and easily understood. I have ordered several of these books and am giving them as Christmas presents to several people and also to my friends who have pre-teen and teenage girls. A wonderful message for them and all of us who need to be positive about who we are instead thinking we have recreate ourselves in some magazine or celebraty image. I love the fact that she gives product recommendations because it is difficult to weed through the many choices out there. I often waste money getting the wrong things. Sometimes you see her use something on the show and want to know what it is to achieve the same results. She names the affordable to very high end products so we can make an informed choice or find something similar. Also, the book layout and photography inside and out is just beautiful!

If you need a "PICK ME Up" in the Confidence department this book is for you

Maybe I'm being to harsh but I felt yet once again for being such a great make up artist I hope this wouldn't fall under the category of fashion/make up books where the professional artist really doesn't give you tips on doing anything. I mean it's great for someone who is just starting to like and get into make up or perhaps you haven't put on make up for a while and your jumping back into the saddle, or maybe your that woman or girl who needs to pull yourself and your confidence back up this book and other books in the (Carmindy Series) are for you. I equate this book to a level one starter book if you are truly trying to up your game on learning about make-up. I like her as a make up artist because she achieves the natural beauty look so effortlessly so I thought maybe buying this book there would be actual useful tips on how to achieve that look, but most of her answers were very cookie cutter and answes you could pull off a magazine at the bookstore, great for killing time, not very effective unless you like really listening to self-confidence gurus.
