He brings the day's leading historical characters alive in all their complexity, diversity and skills. Sympathetic to them yet objective about their strengths and weaknesses, he lets contemporaries do the criticizing in their own words while he observes them from above the fray—all, save John Kennedy, making their way through the usual political thickets to defeat. Donaldson is particularly good at analyzing the divisions within the two major parties, especially those of the Republicans, and in assessing the role of religion in the campaign. Good analysis in an easy read

Donaldson's language is fairly simple and accessible, making this a fast read with a clear analysis thread. The arguments are interesting, and while not all of them are new, it's a good look at how modern campaigning has affected the way candidates are presented to the public (perhaps to the detriment of the process), and the effects of modernity on campaigning (are we seeing the true person)?

Picks up where Making of the President leaves off

This book is a thorough analysis of the 1960 campaign. Unlike Making of the President 1960, Donaldson gives inside narratives of both campaigns. This makes for a more complete understanding of the competing strategies of the two campaigns. This book is exceptional.
