A sequel that greatly improves on its predecessor

I reviewed the first edition of Hacking Exposed: Wireless (HEW) in May 2007, and offered four stars. Three years later I can confidently say that Hacking Exposed: Wireless, 2nd Ed (HEW2) is a solid five star book. After reading my 2007 review, I believe the authors took my suggestions seriously, and those of other reviewers, and produced HEW2, the best book on wireless security available. If you want to understand wireless -- and not just 802.11, but also Bluetooth, ZigBee, and DECT -- HEW2 is the book for you.

Books in the Hacking Exposed (HE) series that implement the winning HE formula do the following: 1) explain a technology, including aspects you may have never heard of before; 2) explain how to break that technology; and 3) explain how to mitigate the attack, if possible. HEW2 uses this methodology and the result is a great HE book. HEW2 is also cross-platform, usually providing advice on using Windows, Linux, or Mac OS X. Furthermore, this advice is exceptionally practical and relevant. The authors not only describe what works, but also what doesn't work. I got the sense that I was speaking with a pro who was willing to share tips from the trenches, not theory copied from a Web site.

Other aspects of HEW2 make it a winner. The authors post three free chapters on their Web site as background that they didn't want to include in the main text. Their Web site also contains code and other background material from the book, like pcap files. Although I am not on the front lines of wireless hacking, I got the sense that these authors do live on that edge. They explained Software Defined Radio, hardware specifically for attacking wireless devices, hardware mods, and other custom approaches that extend beyond normal wireless techniques. I also liked their "end-to-end" examples for attacking Mac OS X and Windows, integrating client-side attacks with wireless activities. Their use of NetMon and Metasploit was solid. Finally, I loved that HEW2 doesn't start and end with 802.11; it also incorporates Bluetooth, ZigBee, and DECT.

I have no complaints for the authors of HEW2. My only suggestion would be to incorporate attacks on GSM and other mobile technologies into the third edition.

If you want to learn how to attack and defend wireless devices, HEW2 is the right book. Bravo.

Great Introductory Book for Wireless Hacking

From a beginner's perspective, this book is great. It offers a broad introduction to 802.11, Bluetooth, ZigBee, and DECT theory, as well as scanning, enumeration, and exploitation techniques. Additionally, the first chapter does a great job of recommending various 802.11 wireless devices. The book's teaching format is not OS-specific either, as the authors will show how to use different applications in different OSs (i.e., using Chanelyzer in Windows, or Kismet in Linux).

What you should expect from this book is an INTRODUCTION to wireless hacking. Like I stated earlier, this book offers broad coverage of various techniques. The authors touch on different subjects, but they do not delve waste-deep into the details of them. Don't expect a WHOLE chapter dedicated to instruction on the aircrack-ng suite, but do expect enough instruction on how to start and run it. There are whole books and websites dedicated to teaching many of the programs covered in this one text.

The authors do a very good job of teaching you how to defeat different forms of wireless security (SSID hiding, MAC filtering, WEP, WPA, etc.). For example, a majority of the text moves in a very logical pattern - first, you learn how to scan and identify a target wireless network. You're then taught how to defeat MAC filtering (if it is in place). Afterwards, you move on to encryption cracking. Finally, you're taught a bit of exploitation.

Don't think that reading this book will turn you into a "master Wi-Fi cracking Jedi" - this mindset will only set you up for disappointment. Think of this book as a "gateway," arming you with the knowledge needed to begin a new career/hobby/whatever. After reading, it's up to you to keep learning more about the different subjects this book touches on, and maybe even discovering some vulnerabilities and/or exploits on your own.

Masterful

This book is a fabulous way to either introduce yourself to the world of wireless security or to sharpen your edge if you are already working in this area. The authors do a fine job of offering up a broad, but reasonably comprehensive view of the wireless security world ranging from frequently encountered technologies such as 802.11 to more exotic technologies such as ZigBee (a low powered, but high battery endurance wireless protocol used in products such as security systems and lighting controls). I had never even heard of ZigBee until I read this book, but now I understand it from a general technical perspective as well as a security perspective.

The authors follow a consistent template for each technology they discuss. They provide a detailed, but approachable overview of the technology and then explore the technology from both an offensive and defensive point of view. The authors have successfully struck a balance between explaining wireless security in an approachable manner and providing detailed hands on examples of interacting with a wide variety of tools. This makes the book a good resource for someone who might only be interested in wireless security from a high level such as an information security manager. However, it also makes the book a valuable resource for the practitioner who wishes to learn wireless security in a more hands on manner.

As an added bonus, the book includes a foreward by Ed Skoudis where Ed reveals that he has the soul of an electrical engineer. He further explains he was partially led to this discovery by a picture of Nikola Tesla shooting lighting-bolts out of his eyes. How can you pass up reading that?

About the Author

The third edition of the book follows in the tradition of the first two editions in being an up to date and indispensable reference for insect ecologists. It is also a useful of review of ecological principles for any ecologist. The book is written in an entertaining style. It is suitable for upper level undergraduate or graduate classes.

Clint Arthur's book, 'What They Teach You at the Wharton Business School' makes you think about, not only how you can create a great business life, but how you can create a great life that brings you a whole lot of happiness and satisfaction. Clint teaches you how to think about becoming and being a success in all areas of your life. As a business owner, he reminded me of an important concept, particularly in the midst of a recession; He says, "A dollar today is worth more than a dollar tomorrow." That phrase and the concept behind it is simple but has profound consequences if not acknowledged by a business owner, where one's cash-flow is concerned. This book is fun to read and reinforces the importance of believing in yourself and loving yourself enough to take the best care of yourself possible....something I advocate, as well. Not a hardcore business book, if that's what you're looking for, but a worthwhile book, written by a business-savvy, successful entrepreneur who has been around the block and has some lessons to pass on, that only experience can teach.

My five year old daughter and I were fortunate to sit next to and meet Clint on a flight last year. He is one of those rare people that understands how to get the most juice out of life! Read this book and you may get more out of it than you college education. Remember...the SMARTER (not harder) you work, the luckier you get. This book could have been better written with the reader in mind. I just finished the Age of Turbulence by Alan Greenspan. Mr. Greenspan's book about his life and global economics was easier to understand than this book about American Foreign Policy by Hastedt.

So dense and boring. Really hard to get into. He tiptoes around concepts instead of giving you a straight definition on anything. Good luck getting through it in one read!

In neighborhoods such as these, overlapping and intertwining associations and institutions provide an elaborate and enduring framework for local social life, within which residents are linked to one another not only through their participation in local organizations, but also through webs of informal social, economic, and political ties.

This book is an ethnographic analysis of the social fabric and internal dynamics of one such neighborhood: Miyamoto-cho, a pseudonym for a residential and commercial district in Tokyo where the author carried out fieldwork from June 1979 to May 1981, and during several summers since. It is a study of the social construction and maintenance of a neighborhood in a society where such communities are said to be outmoded, even antithetical to the major trends of modernization and social change that have transformed Japan in the last hundred years. It is a study not of tradition as an aspect of historical continuity, but of traditionalism: the manipulation, invention, and recombination of cultural patterns, symbols, and motifs so as to legitimate contemporary social realities by imbuing them with a patina of venerable historicity. It is a study of often subtle and muted struggles between insiders and outsiders over those most ephemeral of the community's resources, its identity and sense of autonomy, enacted in the seemingly insubstantial idioms of cultural tradition.

A must for anyone interested in Tokyo

Neighborhood Tokyo is one of only a handful of books in English that offers a realistic and insightful portrait of the lives of ordinary people in this vibrant global metropolis. It provides an intimate and well-grounded account of the daily life of a particular neighborhood located near the heart of the city. Yet, in addressing issues that apply to numerous other downtown neighborhoods, it gives us a sense of the organization and dynamics of daily life throughout much of central Tokyo.

The book is based on the dissertation research of Theodore Bestor (Professor of Anthropology at Harvard University) who spent more than two years in the 1980s in Miyamoto-cho (a pseudonym). Although his fieldwork was conducted before Japan's bubble economy burst in 1990, the main thrust of the book is still relevant to an understanding of life in Tokyo today. Bestor's work challenges the common view that Tokyo, unlike Western cities, is at its core a jumble of "urban villages" in which communities are patterned after the shitamachi (downtown) of Early Modern, pre-industrial Japan. Shitamachi and the townsman way of life, both now and then, is said to be more colorful, boisterous and down to earth, and to have stronger communal ties than newer and more bourgeois sections of the city. The continuity between the shitamachi of today and yesterday is a source of great pride for many Tokyoites.

Bestor argues that this popular view is too simplistic. He asserts that social patterns in present day shitamachi are not so much romantic remnants from a pre-industrial and semi-fedualistic age as they are the products of an ongoing urbanization which began with Japan's industrialization. Places like Miyamoto-cho were not even part of Tokyo in the Edo period, while many of the traditional areas of Edo's shitamachi, like Nihonbashi and Kyobashi, are now sparsely populated sections of the Central Business District. The so-called traditional urban life thought to have been carried over from the past in isolation from the rest of modern Japan in fact derives from the interaction between neighborhood and city government, as well as from responses to "nationwide currents of political, economic, and social change"(4). Chokai (neighborhood associations), for example, which are instrumental to the closely knit shitamachi life, were formed to deal with rapid population turnover and "the evils thought to be inherent in the new urban industrial age" (69).

Why then do so many people believe that certain neighborhoods like Miyamoto-cho resemble the shitamachi of pre-industrial Edo in their customs, values, sense of community, and social structure? Bestor answers that over the years people have manipulated ideas about the past in order to push agendas of social control and distinction. By linking the present to a venerable past, i.e., by representing their neighborhoods as the inheritors of shitamachi traditions, the old middle class of chonin (artisans and shopkeepers) can maintain a certain pride and autonomy vis-a-vis the city government and the new (and higher status) middle class of white collar salaried workers. Bestor calls this manipulation of ideas about the past "traditionalism." For me this is the most fascinating part of the book. It raises the question of what the romanticization of shitamachi life by the larger society is about. To what extent is it claimed to be part of Japan's shared past and why?

Neighborhood Tokyo is significant in the discourse on Japan not only because little had been written from an anthropological perspective about urban Japan at the time of its publication, but also because it illustrates class differences in Japanese society. It thus flies in the face of ubiquitous claims of a relatively classless Japan. It is also an excellent and early example of efforts within anthropology to bring more of a historical and political economic perspective to sociocultural analysis, as well as of efforts in research design to get beyond older notions of bounded field sites.

This book is a must for anybody interested in Tokyo's shitamachi or urban Japan in general. Though it is a scholarly text written mainly for an academic audience, thanks to Bestor's lucid and lively prose style, it is also a very readable and entertaining account filled with many colorful and humorous vignettes.

Hundreds of subjects, one neighborhood

Neighborhood Tokyo is now one of my favorite books. I've only taken one cultural anthropology class and the study of modern anthropology has always fascinated me, yet my knowledge of it is limited and I'm turned off by books written for fellow anthropologists. An author like Bestor is then exactly what I've been looking for. That's not to say he writes below his level of intelligence or simplifies his study. Bestor uses terminology not meant for the layman, and a basic knowledge of Japan itself is almost required to really understand the book.

But it's the way that Bestor writes that really makes Neighborhood Tokyo for everyone. I can guarantee you that not one page you will find dull or irrelevant to the topic. The best way to describe it is as a non-fiction book that follows the unspoken guidelines of successful fiction. He manages to develop Miyamoto-chan's residence like main characters in a novel, and even throws in foreshadowing and plot-twists where he can.

Bestor's main purpose is to give outsiders, layman and anthropologists both, a better idea of the life of urban Tokyo's populace, and to dispose of stereotypes associated with them. Having lived in the neighborhood of his study for three years, he is able to give us a far more personal look at an extremely complex society that no other study could have. It's impossible to even touch upon a single subject that he covers, for it would inevitably give a small impression of something that is connected with every other subject in the book.

If you can't guess, I'm having trouble even describing the book properly in a general sense.

All I can really say to get my point across is that you must read this book. There isn't anyone that I would not recommend this book to, and plenty to whom I would highly recommend it. If you are interested in history, World War II, anthropology, Japan, modern society, food, small business, traffic problems, the environment, the 80's, religion, politics, anime, or have a few days of free time and nothing else to do, this book is a requirement for you.

In fact, I'm expecting a book report about it on my desk by next Tuesday.
