HR Giger worked in the Shepperton Studios near London from February to November 1978, creating the figures and sets for the film Alien (1979) directed by Ridley Scott. The book contains almost completely unpublished material, including drawings, Polaroids showing the monster coming to life, and several still shots from the plentiful film material that Giger took in Shepperton.

Loved the Movie but want to know the art you should get this book.

If your a fan of the legendary Sci Fi horror film Alien you will want this book. It a work/diary book which has photos and sketches from Giger. The best part is the book is translated into English (Al long as you speak English). This book is limited in production and may be hard to find. But, you can find the best prices searching Amazon.

This book is amazing! It is literally a copy of the actual diary with translation pages. There are two cloth book marks to keep track of your place in the diary and in the translation pages. The picture of the assistant "Eddie" working on the alien hand for 2 weeks while Giger slaved away on everything else is worth the price alone!

Great instructions and lovely photos

The author of this book, Christina Butcher, has a wonderful website called Hair Romance that I've been following for a couple of years, and so I was really excited to see that she was coming out with a hard copy book. I really like this new book, and know that I will have fun playing with the styles in it!

For most of my adult life, I've had a short pixie cut, but I've spent the last three years growing it out, and it now reaches to my mid-back. I tend to wear it in the same few styles, so I bought this hoping that it would inspire me to get out of my rut. It definitely will!

The book is divided into four main chapters: ponytails; braids; buns, knots, and twists; and chignons. Each section is also color-coded along the edges of the pages, so it's easy to locate the section you're looking for.

On the left-hand side of each page is the name of the style, some colors photos of what the style looks like, the difficulty level, the ideal hair length for achieving the style, the accessories needed, and a few other items. On the right-hand/facing page are step-by-step drawn instructions for doing each style. This layout is really nice, for it makes it very easy to follow along while looking at the photos of the finished style.

One of the other strengths of this book is that it features styles that are very trendy right now, such as topknots, waterfall braids, and fishtail braids. The instructions are also really easy to follow, and most require only a few accessories, like bobby pins or, for some of the buns, a hair donut. I love to watch hair tutorials on You Tube and was worried that it would be hard to follow written instructions (as opposed to following along with videos), but the instructions are really nicely done.

For most of the styles, you will also probably want to have medium to long hair; none of the styles are really for short hair, which makes sense given the types of styles that are in here.

The only negative I was hoping that this book would be designed to do the styles on yourself, but several of them recommend having someone help you until you practice enough to learn how to do the styling yourself.

I had also been worried that this book would be geared more towards younger women, but there are a lot of styles in here that I will feel comfortable, as a forty-two-year-old, wearing to work or out on a date night with the hubby. A few (like putting your hair in bows) are definitely geared towards a younger audience, but most are on-trend and fun.

This is a fun way to try out some new styles and looks! While each style in here might not be to your liking, there's enough variety in here that you will most likely find quite a few styles to try out.

Great photos but disappointed.

I am a follower of the Hair Romance blog so I was super excited there was a hard copy book to purchase with her styles in it. She has multiple ebooks (30 Twist & Pin Hairstyles in 30 Days or Braids or Buns and more she plans to release) she sells on her website, I'm tempted to buy them but at $15 each, I'd still need to print up in color the 75+ pages as I like to have a hardcopy in front of me so I don't have to go back and forth to the computer to try to do a style. From her website she states that this book is NOT a copy of those eBooks but new styles so it was a steal at the $15 book price already printed. However, the format of the book definitely doesn't WOW like her blog does. Don't get me wrong, there are some amazing and beautiful hairstyles in here, actually a LOT of styles. The photos on the left show some variations of the same style and a write up on the difficulty level, ideal hair length, whether hair extensions are needed, whether assistance is needed, a blurb on accessories and a "Try This" write up on variations referring you to other pages and ideas. Take note though, the font is SMALL, like if you were farsided, you would definitely need your reading glasses. For that side, of the book and how many styles there are, this is a really good book, BUT the right page is a different story. The right page is the "How To Get It" page, obviously the important page. It tells you what you need (brush, hair elastic, bobby pins etc.), the bottom tells you a write up on how to get the style which in some cases isn't 100% clear but the disappointment comes in the step by step pictures. They aren't pictures at all but drawings. Why oh why would she not use the same format as her blog and use the beautiful photos like her tutorials there?? I know she was trying to fit a LOT of styles and information in the book, but sometimes there aren't enough pictures, AHEM, drawings. For example, the twist-over ponytail tells you to clip away medium sections of hair on the side of your face and secure the rest with a ponytail holder (I'm paraphrasing here) and the first drawing shows someone putting a rubberband on hair. Well it would be nice to know how far forward or back a "medium-sized section" is by a visual with a PHOTO. OK, I'm beating a dead horse here. I do like this book and the variety it offers. Plus if you are a fan of the hair blog community, you will see some familiar faces, photos and styles, I just wish it had PHOTOS, not drawings.

A great how-to guide to seemingly simply styles for long hair!

I originally saw this book in December at a high-end stationer and thought it would make a cute stocking-stuffer for the ladies in my family. The book is divided into chapters: buns, ponytails, braids and up-dos. Each page offers a different style of braid, ponytail, bun, etc. complete with pictures, illustrations and text. Some of the styles are elaborate but due to space on the page, the styles suffer from an accurate amount of directions to complete the style quickly. The tutorials are great at mentioning what styling product works best with each type of hair and the buyer should note that specific tools are used to make certain hair styles: a topsytail tool, bun or "donut", specific bobby pins, hair ties, etc. so the buyer may want to consider grabbing a few of these items at a beauty supply store to make this gift the complete package. The book is a paperback book with a durable, hardcover and measures approximately 9" x 7" with close to 200 pages. Please note: I saw this book for $19.95 at a stationary shop and was able to purchase it on Amazon.com for about $12.00 the week before Christmas (with free, Prime shipping). It certainly pays to do your comparison research!

About the Author
Dr Li-ann Thio is Professor of Law at the National University of Singapore (NUS) where she teaches and researches constitutional and administrative law, international law and human rights law, with an emphasis on Asian practice. She holds a B.A. (Jurisprudence) from Oxford University and a Masters and Doctorate in law from Harvard Law School and Cambridge University respectively. In 2004, she received the NUS Young Researcher award for her scholarship and has been twice ranked an NUS Excellent Teacher. From January 2007 to May 2009, she was selected by a special parliamentary select committee to the constitutional office of a Nominated Member of the Singapore Parliament (Eleventh Session). She had a life-changing experience with Jesus Christ as a first-year law undergraduate at Keble College, Oxford. This spiritual encounter caused her to disavow atheism, humanism and nihilism, and to embrace authentic Christianity.

Mind the Gap - The Author, The Book, & The Living Out of Her Faith

Caveat Emptor: I am a personal friend of Dr Li-ann Thio.

However, this has in no way predisposed me in favor of this book.

Over the past 20 years, I have witnessed the author's unfoldment from a gung-ho law student to a revered professor to an intrepid MP and now an accidental author who wrote `Mind The Gap' during an introspective phase. Most who have seen the author in action would not be unfamiliar with her bold and no-nonsense public persona - "The presence of the Christian should be felt in the community, in the works of social service and in the shaping of public policy for the common good, as well as through being a witness to the Good News" (p. 100).

But the inside scoop is this - while Dr. Thio's intellect is widely acknowledged, I am much less stunned by it than by the goodness of her heart and strength that could only grow out of having been with Christ (Acts 4:13). She might appear forthright at first blush but in reality she is meek and gentle in spirit. I can testify firsthand that Dr Thio gave up the comfort of her own digs to accommodate a friend when she learnt of the latter's dire living conditions in a heartbeat. I can also attest to her affection for her doggie companions that is in keeping with Proverbs 12:10a "A righteous man has regard for the life of his beast". These anecdotes obviously do not do justice to Dr. Thio's unswerving faith and works for the Lord. I wrote them not as flattering preambles but to provide a sincere indicant of the author's heart condition which overflows into her actions, including her speech and work for the Lord. Empowered by her FAITH in God, the author has taken a bold stand speaking up against the grain of accepted secular world views and warped modern day theologies (P.104-110), culminating in this book of hers, forcefully contending for righteousness in an age of lawlessness.

`Mind The Gap' starts out explicating the author's Christian belief which has translated into her unabated zeal in doing God's work, whether as a law professor or a member of parliament, in the midst of persecution, mocking, revilement, ostracism and life threats (p.83). The author's continual pursuit of personal godliness and thirst for God's knowledge is cogent in her writing, a feat that testifies the copious amount of time she has spent assimilating His words and truth through a motley assemblage of Christian literature. Her book illustrates how the author has lived out her faith by obediently placing God as the ultimate goal in her life, calling to mind Oswald Chamber's words, "shutting out every other consideration and keeping herself before God for this one thing only - My Utmost for His Highest".

`Mind The Gap' is a book about LOVE. It is a book that speaks truth in love, piercing our souls and convicting us that we "all have sinned and fall short of the grace of God" (Romans 3:23) as it should be. It is the love of God made manifest in the author's writing to exhort and restore fellow Christians who have tarried or been led astray or in being overly tolerant of extremist humanistic world views (p.238-241) or plain cowardly (p.266-267) to usefulness (Galatians 6:1-2). It is not a book of abstract concepts but one that comes with perspicuous instructions as to how one could go about achieving and perpetuating sanctification (Chapters 1-3), not least its practical guide to identifying our adversaries by their fruits (Chapter 10) and exposing their rhetorical tricks in distorting the truth and further their own agendas (Chapter 11). My favorite is the author's sagacious comeback in fending off Ad Hominem arguments (p.278-280). Further, the author debunks many verisimilitudes and supposed Christianly thinking by nudging us back to the heart of the issue: to focus on being right before God; to seek first His kingdom and His righteousness above all else (Matthew 6:33); and to make an irrevocable decision to count being crucified with Christ nothing but a sublime gain, no expense spared (Philippians 1:21).

`Mind The Gap' also gives us HOPE. Not the hopeless variety of `hope-so' and `hopefully' kind of hope. It gives us a blessed hope of victory: while we may suffer for a fleeting moment for our faith that is not dissimilar to the backdrop against which the Apostle John penned the Book's grand finale, God is faithful (Revelations 15: 2-4, 17: 14, 20: 11-12). It reminds us of the hope that while we cannot heal the world or save souls (regeneration is purely God's prerogative), we can make it a better place by taking personal responsibilities - for ourselves (Christian sanctification and going on the offensive against the enemy); our neighbors (witnessing in love; overcoming evil with good et al); our churches (praying for and supporting our pastors and leaders); and our governments (being actively involved or acting as voices of conscience, or both, P. 242 & P. 290-291).

Finally, `Mind the Gap' is a profession that `HEAVEN ON EARTH' is not a far-fetched Pollyannaish ideology but a distinct possibility if we seek to be imitators of Christ (aptly highlighted in the story of the Centurion in the gospel of Luke, p.339-341). In the same vein, C.S. Lewis posited in the preface to his book The Great Divorce: "I think earth, if chosen instead of Heaven, will turn out to have been, all along, only a region in Hell: and earth, if put second to Heaven, to have been from the beginning a part of Heaven itself." It is my prayer that Christian readers would be jolted into emulating the verve and vigor so eminently pervasive in the author's life and works for Christ: to be in this world and not of it; to live fearlessly and passionately embodying God's message of faith, hope and love, functioning as shining light and tangy salt.

I would exhort all who take their Christian faith seriously to read this book.

Well written and personally challenging

A question that has plagued my mind for some time now is "How can Christians be dogmatic about anything in a pluralistic society, especially at the political level?" My father introduced me to this book and I have found it challenging to my addiction to relativism. I found it to be well written and the author credible. I would recommend that all Christians give it a read. In fact, I intend to start a book club with some friends so that we can discuss some of the ideas from the book.

About the Author
Gary Sinclair first became interested in Mind, Body, and Spirit work after recovering in a year and a half from about 80% mobility loss from 14 years of Multiple Sclerosis. He had also slowly gone down to 1/3 lung capacity from birth defects and other complications. Six months after healing from MS, he miraculously received full lung capacity in fifteen minutes. He then went on to become a National Amateur Senior Olympic Gold Medal Figure Skating Champion for the USA and much more. There are even more miracles! For over three decades Gary has researched the lessons from healing as he created CyberPhysiology: Mind, Body, Spirit Training. Gary holds a Master Certification in Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) , Hypnotherapy, Transpersonal Hypnotherapy, Time Line Therapy,™ Spirit Releasement Therapy, Soul Retrieval, Regression Therapy, Past-Life Therapy, Kinesiology, and studied even more in medically oriented energy healing work.
