About the Author
The poet, Soonja Kwon, was born in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province in 1958. She graduated from Kyungpook National University and Kookmin University Graduate School of Education with a major in English. She began her literary career in 2003, when she received the Imagery Award for new and emerging poets. She has published a collection of poetry, titled Umok Hoetjip (Umok Raw Fish Restaurant).

Kimchi, Tears, and Love

Soonja Kwon illustrates all elements of motherhood in her poetry. The vivid images that are conjured throughout this collection represent the many layers of love, happiness, sadness, pain, joy and burdens of motherhood. These complexities are brought to life within flowing phrases such as, "The hands that scraped filth countless times. Mother's hands that are dyed red from mixing kimchi. Covered in the smell of food and waste, the hands that were always wet, endured hard times, and lived a life of passion are now fading with time," (Rubber Gloves). The seaside backdrop in many of Kwon's poems illicit the senses so that the reader can smell the smell the salty air and fish and hear the rhythmic beating of the ocean waves. These are easily connected to a mother's salty tears and beating heart. Anyone who has ever been a mother or lost a mother will find words to relate to in Mother's Dawn.

Mother's Dawn

As I read this poetry, the author seems to sing flowers
which hardly disappearing from wind, snow, cold or hot weather, even tonados.
The flowers represent we, ordinary people, our neighbors who are in the shadow.
Even life is in rough and pain with different reasons,
the author encourges us as beautiful flowers
which never feel isolated, neglected or mistreated.
I could even learn how to love and why I have to love others.
Author looks at everthing in our life with the love of mother and father.
The power of love makes flower, lotus flower, grow up in even the dark swamp.
