Very poor read. Could not recommend this to anyone...

At the top of this book it reads "how to skyrocket your Business through "social Media Marketing"" So I was really hoping for some "how to" type advice. What I found is far from that.

At the bottom of this book it says "Master Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Instagram, & LinkedIn. You will only find about 4-5 pages dedicated to each. On top of that there it is in size 20 font double spaced. Do you think thats enough information to "master" a complex social media site? I don't. The book is 121 pages total, but It could easily fit into a 50 page book if it didn't look like it was written for a first grad reading class.

It was has almost no actual advice other than very general ideas that almost everyone should know any way. It talks a lot about there being tools to use that can help you do xy and z. It never actually tells you what the tools are, how they work, or even where to find them. If Andy knows of such tools why didn't he recommend a few of his favorite??? When it came to the SEO portion of the book it basically said. SEO is important and you should research about it, but maybe don't spent to much time on it because its hard and changes all the time... It covered other topics in the same fashion and I was highly disappointed.

If I learned anything from this book, it was that a "best seller" on amazon means nothing. I have heard that any best seller list can be bought out, I guess amazon can too. If you are looking for good social media marketing books, check out Gary Vaynerchuk books. This book is basically an abridged and paraphrased version of Gary's book "Crush It." Although that book is now outdated, it is still very good.

I will say, if you know absolutely nothing about social media or marketing, this may be a good read. However, if you have taken a Marketing 101 class and have a facebook, there is a good chance you could write this book yourself. Unless you need a description of each social media site and what they are used for, or a quick reintroduction to what Marketing is, then do not buy this book

It also contains strategies and tips to brand your business, make it more visible. I found this book as a complete guidebook to master social media and using it as a marketing platform.

Can't believe I wasted money on getting this book

Can't believe I wasted money on getting this book. Very superficial and useless info for many marketers. Read the book in 1/2 hour. Very little if any useful content after reading the thin, little book. They do not provide return labels, so you have to ship the book back and pay for return shipping. I like straight to the point, educational marketing books. This one was not for me at all. Out of the many books on marketing and advertising that I have read, this one is by far the worst in terms of content.
They also write on the initial pages of the book that the content in this book is meant for educational and entertainment purposes only and that they are not responsible for the accuracy of data provided. Then what's the point of this book? There was nothing entertaining about it and the few sentences that I read that seemed fairly new to me are so few, that they would not even fill a paragraph. I just had to write this review, as I was shaking my head the entire time I read this book. Sorry.....

About the Author
Growing up in a small town in Southern New Jersey, Christian always had big dreams of making an impact in the world. He was frequently mentoring younger students and teammates and always loved being in a coaching role. He knew, though, that he needed to see the world and get out of his small town to truly make a difference in people's lives. At the age of 18, Christian enrolled at the University of South Carolina where he studied business management and marketing. At the age of 21, he started a painting business with Young Entrepreneurs Across America where he ran a $73,000 business in 6 months and was the division sales leader. The following year, he took on a leadership role and coached and mentored 5 rookie branch managers. His team produced over $360,000 in just 6 months, earning him Executive of the year. After College, Christian was determined to follow his passion for coaching and mentoring. He moved to Boston where he mentors inner city high school students, continues to coach students on a large scale through YEAA, and now focuses most of his attention on helping people break their limiting beliefs and maximizing their potential. Helping his mentees and students achieve their goals is his only goal.

While this book may have been intended for those just coming from or going into college, I also highly recommend it for anyone who may think that they are a little more "seasoned" in the work force as well. I've been in business for the past 8 years and while I've had my share of failures and success, I could not relate any harder to this book. Christian makes his readers aware of just how much opportunity there is in this world and after reading this, I can admit that I am guilty of limiting my potential to do even greater things with my life. While I would have loved to have this book in my hand 10 years ago, I feel that the message Christian is relaying to his readers still applies to me at my age. There are certainly things in here that anyone can take with them regardless of where they are at in life. I look forward to applying the words of this book to my life and highly recommend it to anyone who wants more from life than to be content.

Powerful, Easy to Follow, Essential Message

I started this book by request of the author, Christian Chasmer, because he's a respectable colleague/friend of mine.
Upon flipping through the pages on Kindle Cloud, I stopped reading just because it was asked of me, but because the words written are incredibly meaningful and important for anyone to hear if they want to be successful. In fact, the 5 Principles outlined couldn't have come to me at a better time in my life. Not only are these 5 Principles easy to comprehend, but the book is written so well with added quotes and challenges, the principles come to life by giving you ways to put into action.

Ultimately, it took me 49 minutes to read. 49 minutes to read what could change me for a lifetime.

I plan on sharing this with my friends, siblings, and branch managers. I recommend it to anyone who wants to take an hour of their Netflix watching or Twitter scrolling in order to reevaluate what you want in your life and how to get there.

Cute, short, to the point. Nothing new or original. Not deep in any way. You can read it in one sitting. I don't think the author really understands how limiting beliefs work or are developed, and I don't think he has any idea what the law of attraction is. It felt like reading a Monday morning pep talk for a Fortune 500 company. I'm not knocking it, just keep your expectations low.

This textbook was required for my communication class. At first I thought it was kind of interesting looking at the aspects of communication that are often overlooked. Then I realized that there wasn't really that much content. The book is definitely a bit repetitive throughout each chapter. Each chapter discusses its topic, but the review material which is generally inserted into each chapter is extremely useless, because it is very much worded like the chapter is. For example, the chapter will introduce a new concept or vocabulary and then on the side of the page include a definition for the word. The definition won't really expand upon or clarify what has been said in the main text of the chapter, it will be very much the same. Since the new concepts and vocabulary is highlighted, there is no reason to include the side definitions as presented in this book. Chapter summaries seem to be useless as well, I guess unless you don't plan on reading the chapter. The book discusses how to give different types of presentations, so there is a bit of value, but I don't think there is anything you might not be able to find online. As for its currentness, the book has very up to date topics and examples. I would have to say that some of the true communication stories are interesting. Other than that the currentness imposed on the book doesn't add anything and often feels awkward. The book mentions current trends, events, people, and even websites, but I don't feel like it is necessary and I think it will date the book very quickly as it ages.

Okay but with some caveats

On the positive side, the publisher makes this book available to the college where I teach. Although we are a US college and our country is part of the US postal system, most other publishers think we are part of the British Empire and won't send us examination copies. Another plus is that the photos are colorful and include many different people.

On the negative side, there are errors of fact, lack of citations for claims, broken up or incoherent parts of the text, isolated paragraphs, and a frequent lack of balanced writing, to name just the main weaknesses. An example of a "broken" text is on page 61, where we read that certain words are "disrespectful of the...misogyny that [many women have suffered]." The words cited are disrespectful of women and indicate a kind of misogyny.

An example of an error of fact and lack of citation is on page 48, where the authors make a misleading claim about Mandarin Chinese, perhaps because they are not familiar with certain terms that linguists use to discuss the language. For instance, they start by referring to "statements" in English, where "the subject is placed before the predicate." A condensed example might be, "The boy bit the dog," where 'boy' is the topic or subject of the sentence and 'bit the dog' is the predicate. "Predicate" usually means the verb plus whatever comes after it. This following item can be a noun, like dog, or it can be an adjective, like tall, as in "The boy is tall." I hope I am not boring my readers, but it is helpful to understand that we call "tall" a "complement" [not compliment; spelling is important here] of the verb "is."

The authors err here because they say that in Chinese "an idea is usually expressed with a verb and a complement (which is rarely a noun and usually another verb or an adjective)." I found almost the exact same wording on a Pinyin website, "pinyin" being a word using the Western alphabet to describe a way of pronouncing Chinese for people who cannot read the Chinese writing system, called "characters" or "kanji [in English, from Japanese]." On that website, however, the writer explains that the "complement" system refers to words or phrases--not "ideas" or "statements." In fact, anyone familiar with Mandarin Chinese knows that many Chinese statements follow the same pattern as in English: somebody does something or "is" something. We call this the SVO/SVC pattern, where the verb most often comes after the subject. In Japanese and Korean, in contrast, the pattern is SOV/SCV--the main verb often comes after the predicate. Amazon does not like if we have links to other sources, so I have to rest on my experience as a student of Mandarin Chinese. (I served as a translator of Chinese to English for the US Navy for several years, and I lived in Taiwan for nine.)

This small point may seem very nitpicky to the casual reader, but it shows a certain carelessness on the part of the authors. If they don't care about this part of the text, what else might be wrong?

They seem also to have no real understanding of languages and cultures other than the American, despite claiming to be culturally sensitive. Scholars should not display such indifference or ignorance.

For example, they apparently do not know that there is a great deal of controversy surrounding the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, which they quote on page 48. They make some unsupported claims about the nature of language and its influence on perception. They could have chosen examples at the core of language, such as the way people talk about and use "time," but instead they chose to talk about colors. They say that if you know the words for different shades of colors, you will "see" the differences. I wish they hadn't chosen that one, because I worked in "color sensitive" industries for several years, helping to choose colors that customers wanted. The joke here is that I am colorblind (red-green) and could care less about the names of colors. Yet, I was able to make my selection because every industry that works with color shades has either printed books with the colors (the Pantone Matching System, for instance) or a swatch system for cloth and other materials. Anyone who has been in a hardware store in search of paint can see such a system. In contrast, the authors could have cited languages where people do not use words for even the main "primary" colors that most readers of this comment will be familiar with. In one such language, the speakers have two main color words, which translate into English as "dark" and "light." But to imagine that they do not "see" certain colors for which we give names is not supported by any evidence.

Saddled with this book as our text and unable to find another for now, I have to separate the chaff from the wheat for my students, which of course is a teacher's obligation. Still, it seems unfair to students who buy this book, who have a reasonable right to expect that people who write books know what they're saying and that the publishers hire editors literate enough to check the books they publish both for clarity and accuracy. Alas, everyone's cutting corners. Maybe that's why some students do, too.

Great quality for an even better price!

The copy was very excellent! There were a few brown streaks accross the cover (front and back) which I would've prefered to be cleaned before it was mailed since it came off fairly easily. Once I wiped the front and back, peeled off the stickers and removed the glue - it looked brand new!!
No bent pages, I've only found one word underlined faintly in pen and 3ish very small brown spots on the inside of the book, first left page. I'm very very satisfied with the great quality for the price :) Packaging was also very protected and well done! Thank you so much.

OUTDATED AND MISLEADING

THIS IS NOT A TRUE BOOK. This is a PHOTOCOPY of a TYPEWRITTEN United States Army Marksmanship manual of the late 1960's or early 1970's. The supposed copyright of 2002 is misleading at best, and at worst is an outright lie. The date the manual was published by the Army has been removed from the Foreword.

All the references in the text seem to be from the 1960's, even one from the 1950's. Also, the text states there are two "volumes" to the "manual", and only the first is present - the second volume is missing.

While a lot of the material is quite useful, there are better sources for pistol marksmanship material, and far more recent.

The publisher, Fredonia Books (Netherlands), has played this trick before for marksmanship books - make a photocopy of a manuscript that is decades old, removed the initial publishing date, and posted a phony "publishing" date, which is actually their own COPYRIGHT date. I wonder how the U.S. Army feels about that.

More than a tech-manual

I am the owner/chief-firearms instructor of a firearms-training company, and as such, am constantly searching for information that will my students and I improve in our tactics. After reading numerous books that referenced or took excerpts from this book, I decided to 'go to the source'. Be warned: this is NOT an easy read! This book reads like it was wrote - a 'tech-manual'. It's a little better than the tech-manuals written in the '50s, but it is still a tech-manual nonetheless. The minutae that the book references can be irksome at first, but once you accept that the author(s) believe in the relevancy of the details, the lights come on. Whether you want to concentrate solely on marksmanship or improve your combat-shooting techniques, this book is invaluable. Buy it, study it, apply it, and your shooting skills will improve.

Engrossing and Insightful

I really might have given this book a four-star rating, because I would be inclined to save the five-star ratings for Faulkner-level fiction, but I wanted to offset the tepid reviews of other readers. I liked this book a lot.

I picked the book off the shelf for its bizarre title, and I was very glad that I did. This book works wonderfully on a number of levels---I will be thinking about it for quite some time. It's not your typical easy-read mystery novel, but it is nonetheless extremely engaging. It's deep enough to satisfy my English major origins, and accessible enough to hold me to the end, despite my overloaded lifestyle and constant interruptions from my children. This is an extremely insightful book that rings very true, both emotionally and philosophically.

The themes---or, rather, what I perceived as the themes---are complex and thought-provoking. The author doesn't dole out easy answers to moral and philosophical questions---life doesn't work that way, and neither should literature. What are some of the themes, as I perceive them? Oh, well........Personal moral responsibility, loyalty, the interconnectedness of human beings, moral relativity, emotional intimacy, how one judges the "goodness" of another human being, the emotional fall-out from keeping (or not keeping secrets), intellectual snobbery, the purpose of art..... I may be completely off base, but these are the issues that this book raised in my mind. Oh, and I disagree with the person who found the book bizarre. The characters, and even the plot, rang very true for me.

Whether you like or dislike this book, I predict that it will be very memorable for you.

One of the best writers I had never heard of before

Unlike most of the other people who wrote reviews here, I was racing home from work each day to devour more of this book. I love Mattison's writing, and the voice of her complicated main character in this novel is easy to hear and endlessly interesting to listen to. Although I'm not sure I would like Daisy in real life, I couldn't put this book down because I loved having access to the internal struggles and seeing how they often contrasted with her actual actions.

Although I sometimes found Daisy's choices illogical or hard to understand, I think that is the point of this sort of book: it's a specific character study, as much as it is a collection of observations about human nature in general. The slightly fragmented style of the story didn't bother me at all, because I had no trouble keeping up, and in general I like nonlinear stories. (note: LA Confidential, the movie, was way too fragmented for me).

Daisy is a fragmented, complicated person, and she is the one telling the story, so it makes sense that the stories are a little bit fragmented and interwoven. That's how real women are! I think Mattison has real insights that more readers should enjoy.

Something Different

A very original if flawed book. The character is obstinately real, honest, even as annoying as some people we know. Auden's line, "You will love your crooked neighbor with your croooked heart" comes to mind. The parallel story of the play-within-a-novel doesn't work terribly well, and it doesn't begin to resonate with the depths of the dimensions in Mattison's The Book Borrower. September 11 jumps in, a Deus Ex Machina, to save the plot with Something Really Important. Still, a very compelling and refreshing read.

Good, but far from authorative

Having been a long-time fan of LucasArts's greatest and most original games (The Secret of Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Grim Fandango, et al), it's somewhat disappointing to learn that I know more about the titles than the author. While it is wonderful to see glimpses of rare production art, design documents and concepts for unfinished games, it's also a shame that the original content is light and even sometimes incorrect.

Rogue Leaders typically spends two pages per game. That could be enough room if the type size and line-spacing was that of a normal book or magazine article, but unfortunately here it amounts to little more than 300 words per game for bigger titles, like 'Day of the Tentacle' or 'Sam & Max', and even less for games like 'Loom'.

Major milestones, like 'The Secret of Monkey Island' get a mere 500 words, which means anecdotes, like the fact that the designers had to help package the first printing of SOMI themselves in order to make the shipping deadline, are unfortunately missing.

The book doesn't really have much of a narrative, either, and instead favours segmenting each game into its own mini-article. There is some attempt at the beginning to tell the story of the companies origins, but this seems to quickly evaporate once the company gets going.

This segmentation really works against trying to weave LucasArts's growth into a coherent tale, and the book often feels a bit confused as to where to turn next. You'll read about Monkey Island 1 (1990), its sequel (1991), Loom (1990), Day of the Tentacle (1993) and then Fate of Atlantis (1992) -- in that order.

There are also mistakes to found here, too. For example, the author makes no distinction between the two VERY different Indiana Jones 'Action' and 'Adventure' games for Last Crusade and Fate of Atlantis, printing design documents from both as if they belonged to the same game.

The lack of a strong narrative, added to the book's lightweight writing-style, means you never feel the highs and lows of the company's successes or failures. For example, after reading about the making of the early LucasArts title 'P.H.M Pegasus' and the split it caused within the company, you never find out if the game was successful or not.

As a companion to the recent exhaustive 'Making of...' Star Wars and Indiana Jones books, this is decidely a "lite" title, reading almost like a coffee-table book. Occassions when critical commentary is actually applied to the games is extremely rare, but its presence indicates that there could have been more.

Considering that articles of greater depth can be found for free on the internet, and considering this book's target audience is the die-hard fan, its light-weight style a very odd choice.

Why four stars, then? Simply because access to never-before-seen historical material, what there is of it, rises this book to the above-average. It's only a shame that Rob Smith wasn't able to create a definitive, exhaustive and authorative story of the life of LucasArts, because this most definitely is NOT it.

A quick note to adventure-game fans considering this book: Over a third is dedicated to the "golden age" of LucasArts, the rest focuses on the plethora of externally-developed Star Wars games.

Great book - could've been better - I know, I was there

I agree whole-heartedly with J.C. Walker's review - it's spot on. It's a beautiful book that's attractive and fun to look at, but the amount of actual information is spotty and in many places, poorly researched. I worked at LEC from '92 to '97, and then at Larry Holland's Totally Games after that for 6 more years, so I had a hand in many of the projects that are featured. It seems that very few people from those days were interviewed, and those interviews lean heavily toward the producer/project leader side of things. If Mr Smith had cast a wider net (and those who were with the company back then are quite easy to look up and contact), many glaring omissions and inaccuracies could have been avoided.

I certainly don't want this to sound like sour grapes at all. It's a beautifully done book and I would recommend it to any fan of LEC's games. Just be aware that it's a lightweight compendium rather than a historical document of the company. I wish more artists (far beyond myself) had been interviewed for the book, but then I suppose it might have ended up a few hundred pages fatter than its already ample 250 pages.

A Great Archive

This is a good, comprehensive look at LucasArts. As someone who has played all of their point & click adventure games and some of their Star Wars ones, this book is a fascinating archive of storyboard/visualization artwork, background stories, domestic/international packaging artwork, posters, photos, and other internal documents.

If you're a reader of RetroGamer, you're probably accustomed to the lengthy "Making Of" articles which goes in depth and behind the scenes on classic games. The opposite is true of this book. Instead of the lengthy article with the tiny photos, you'll find less behind-the-scenes stories on a particular game and pages of large, beautiful production artwork. This book aims to provide a comprehensive view of LucasArts through the years rather than focusing on a particular game. You'll even see a few pages of canceled games like a Full Throttle's sequel and a few paragraphs on that hated Sar Wars fighting game (Masters of Teris Kasi or whatever it was called). It covers everything from the start through 2008 (Lego Indiana Jones, Clone Wars, Star Wars Unleashed).

The $40 Amazon price makes this an affordable, fun gift for anyone who has played the classic LucasArts games. Once this book goes out of print, prepare to watch the selling price of this book jump (just like those CD collections of LucasArts games).

I'm not sure what to make of George Lucas' foreword. I've never been a fan of the recent direction of LucasArts (No point and click adventure games. Two cancellations of a Full Throttle sequel. Oversaturation of Star Wars games. Unavailability of any classic games as WiiWare, on Xbox Live, PSN, etc). So I would have preferred a book that didn't have his stamp of approval on it. But perhaps that was the only way the author could access all of these documents. The George Lucas foreword is only a page long (3 short paragraphs actually) and pretty generic and worthy of a PR newsletter. I don't feel the foreword added anything to the book. In fact, George Lucas didn't even reference the book.

My only complaint about this book: I wish it were twice as long. At 250+ pages, it does a good job. But I wonder what awesome production artwork will never be seen by most people.
