Outstanding take on one man's love for dogs
By J.K.WILKINSON@USA.NET
Nothing could be more pleasing then to see someone articulate a subject so well. Often quoted (and for good reason), few authors have a more honest voice or greater capacity for storytelling then Gene Hill.

I couldn't put it down and I don't even hunt!
By A Customer
I bought this for my husband/hunter and I read it before he did, he was busy with the other one I gave him along with this one called "Just Dogs, a literary and photographic tribute to the great hunting breeds". The stories were wonderful and the illustrations were just as good. My husband often enjoys stories over a single lengthy plot, and these fit the bill perfectly. This book makes a great gift, and the above mentioned is definitely worth considering, the photos alone are fantastic.

An Artificial Intelligence Approach to Legal Reasoning (Artificial Intelligence and Legal Reasoning), by Anne von der Lieth Gardner

Law and legal reasoning are a natural target for artificial intelligence systems. Like medical diagnosis and other tasks for expert systems, legal analysis is a matter of interpreting data in terms of higher-level concepts. But in law the data are more like those for a system aimed at understanding natural language: they tell a story about human events that may lead to a lawsuit. Statements of the law, too, are written in natural language and legal arguments are often arguments about what that language means or ought to mean.

This study is one of the few research efforts in this fertile area. It is unique in developing a computational model for analyzing legal problems in a way that brings these strands of AI research together and makes sense from a jurisprudential perspective as well.

Gardner first analyzes several positions in Anglo-American jurisprudence and their relevance for work in artificial intelligence. She identifies aspects of legal reasoning that any truly expert system in law must make a place for and suggests a way of decomposing the process of legal analysis that takes these aspects into account. She compares the resulting framework with those used by other legal analysis programs. A solid exposition of current AI techniques follows in chapters covering the author's system (written in Maclisp) for offer and acceptance problems, taken from law examinations, involved in contract law.

Anne von der Lieth Gardner has a law degree and a Ph.D. in computer science, both from Stanford University. An Artificial Intelligence Approach to Legal Reasoning inaugurates the series Artificial Intelligence and the Law: Processes and Models of Legal Reasoning, edited by L. Thorne McCarty and Edwina L. Rissland. A Bradford Book.

Of historical importance
By Dr. Lee D. Carlson
To design a machine that can engage in legal reasoning has been of great interest in the field of artificial intelligence and in some schools of jurisprudence. This goal has not been achieved to the satisfaction of all those involved in building legal reasoning machines, but some progress has been made. This book, which is widely cited by those working in legal artificial intelligence, was one of the few at the time of publication that gave a fresh approach to the problem.

When reading the book it is apparent that many questions must be answered before a successful legal machine can be constructed. These include: How does one apply a rule to the stated facts of a legal case? Is there a demarcation between the conclusions that can be reached using ordinary logical deduction and those arrived at by the discretion of the judge? Can a machine analyze full and encapsulate in its knowledge base the concepts of wisdom and justice? How does the language of rules connect with the language in which facts are stated? What kinds of predicates are to be used only in the antecedents of rules? If the descriptions and examples are only `usually fairly good,' when can a machine make the conclusion that these examples are good enough for a particular issue at hand? How does one determine that a legal predicate not defined further by rules is clearly satisfied by the facts of a case being analyzed? How are past cases to be represented? How is the legal machine to represent the reason(s) for a decision? Which facts are to be considered relevant in determining the satisfaction of which legal predicate?

The author addresses these questions in this book, and even a reader not interested in the applications of artificial intelligence will gain good insights into the processes of legal reasoning. Legal conclusions for example can be divided into two classes, those that are the result of deductive reasoning and those that require the judge to select the `just' conclusion. A `just' conclusion is therefore to be distinguished from those arrived at deductively. This observation, if valid, definitely has ramifications for the building of legal machines, since deductive reasoning patterns are fairly easy to implement in machines. But the concept of a `just' conclusion would be a challenge for a machine implementation.

As brought out in the book, any kind of reasoning pattern utilized by a machine must be subject to constraints, these constraints being unique to the domain in which the machine reasons. In legal reasoning, this constraint takes the form of `stare decisis', which means that the machine must be able to make analogies and be aware of cases in the past. In addition, legal reasoning is `rule-guided', rather than rule-governed, and legal rules are heuristic in nature, generally have exceptions, and sometimes may contradict one another. Besides these constraints, the terms in legal discourse are what the author calls `open-textured,' in that the meaning of terms and predicates are inherently indeterminable. Legal questions frequently invite more than one answer, and these answers can change over time. Hence legal reasoning patterns must be able to adapt to a dynamic knowledge base.

According to the author, the strategy for a successful legal reasoning machine would involve the ability to distinguish between `hard' versus `easy' questions. The hard questions in legal discourse arise because of the existence of competing rules, unresolved predicates, and competing cases. The machine must be able to detect `hard' cases, and it could do this by using a collection of heuristics. One of these heuristics involves the use of what the author calls `common sense knowledge' (CSK) rules, which are to be distinguished from general human commonsense knowledge. If an answer can be derived using CSK rules and if there does not exist any objection to using this answer, then question is assumed to be `easy.' The second heuristic entails that if no answer about the satisfaction of a legal predicate can be defined using CSK rules, then the machine will search for cases that illustrate that the facts of the case at hand are actually an example of a situation that the legal predicate has covered in the past. The third states that if a tentative answer is derived using non-legal knowledge, then the machine will search for cases that call for the opposite answer.

To test and benchmark her strategy, the author works in the field of `offer and acceptance' and `contract law', and deals specifically with the case `Adams vs Lindsell'. To construct the reasoning patterns, she brings in a highly interesting construction that she calls a `augmented transition network' (ATN). An ATN represents the standard states in a contract situation and the interpretations of events are represented as links between the states. The ATN that she constructs has twenty-three sates, twenty legal rules, and one hundred generalized `fact patterns.' The latter are associated with each legal predicate, and can be supported by several cases.

The author gives detailed analysis of her approach, and remarks that its use has not produced situations wherein a `tentative' truth value is defeated. Several test problems are analyzed at the end of the book, these dealing mostly with how the reasoning patterns analyze events, and one that deals, interestingly, with legal study aids. From her conclusions it is readily apparent that legal reasoning is very difficult to implement in artificial intelligence, for the primary reason that deduction does not by itself determine the outcome of a case. Another reason is the role of legal precedent, which can give a new interpretation to the language of old rules.

The author also makes commentary on the future of legal artificial intelligence. Considering the progress made in this field since this book was published, especially in the use of knowledge engineering in the practice of law, one can be confident that legal machines will make their presence known in the courts, in legal philosophy, and in constitutional interpretation in the years to come.

Review
"I congratulate the authors-Richard Davis and Duncan Fitzgerald-on an excellent textbook about coasts for an audience with limited scientific expertise. I would recommend Beaches and Coasts to anyone with an interest in this topic. "(Environmental & Engineering Geoscience, February 2011)

"...one of the most complete, clearly written and up-to-date publications on the topic...Beaches and Coasts is a book that deserves wide readership...Its didactic form and simple (though not superficial) language makes the book excellent for teaching...[it] will become a classical textbook in the subject." Is ok
By Johanset Orihuela
This was a class requirement. The book is hardcover and the content well organized and well illustrated.
It is recommended if your class needs it. However, collegue level books must do something about their pricing.
Why is it that the most expensive books are designed for an audience that can barely pay for it?

Many trading books focus on the technical aspects of market analysis. Others focus on the psychological aspects. This book joins the dots, arguing that self-awareness is of fundamental importance in building a methodology adapted to the trader and the instrument he trades.

In walking through the development of his own trading methodology, the author provides a turn-key solution adapted to the volatile, but highly lucrative, regulated Forex market.

Whilst nothing can remove the hard work necessary to become consistently profitable in such a competitive business, this book is essential reading for anyone aspiring to build or adapt a robust trading methodology, tailored to his own personality and the specific characteristics of the regulated Forex market.

If you absorb and assimilate the principles herein, your trading performance will improve radically. It’s as simple as that.

"Joe" is a real trader (surprise!)
By W. R. Booker
I've known "Joe" for years now, from the time he hosted me on a tour of a 500-ft submarine destroyer battleship in the North Sea - all the way to now, as he successfully manages his own funds on a few hours of trading per day, with a low-risk strategy. The reason I tell you this is because it's impossible to say that this review isn't biased. I know the guy. I trust him. I plan on investing some of my own investment capital with him in 2011. So with that preface, I want to tell you just a couple of reasons that this book matters, and why you should read it.

In a world where advice-givers come and go, and never show you any evidence of their actual trading ability, "Joe" sets himself apart. You're not just reading a book about theory: you're reading about his own practice. This is what he really does, and he proves it: his trading performance is public, posted real-time, on Twitter, every single day. He doesn't _tell_ you that he trades. He trades. He shows you. Why read anything written from anyone who doesn't show you that they really put their own money to work with the methods that they write about? Many advice givers in this business have decided it's too embarrassing to show a loss - and that embarrassment would harm their business - so they show nothing. I'm sorry to say that in the past, I've done that too - but "Joe" was a significant influence on me changing that, and it has made a ton of difference for me personally. "Joe" has never done any trading that wasn't also simultaneously public. That counts for something substantial.

Second, in a world of books that tell you the same thing that you already learned a year ago in another place - this is refreshing. It's a personal story, but it's also a complete trading method. Granted, it's inspired from something he read and learned from another source - but it's original. It gives credit where credit is due, but then it breaks new ground. I built a small cottage with Strategy:10. "Joe" came along and built a skyscraper next door.

Dollar for dollar (and you know as well as I do how much trading books usualy cost), this is one of the most valuable books you can have in your trading collection. It's a no-brainer. Buy the book.

Reality Check - The Only Kind Banks Will Cash
By Richard K.
Joe lays it on the line like no other currency or, for that matter, any other kind of trading book I've ever read. Joe strips down professional Forex trading to its two essential elements, either without which you will not be able to make money trading currencies, or for that matter in any field: (1) knowing what to do and (2) having the character to do it. Making money trading money is a profession no different from any other.

Joe first thoroughly, yet succinctly, explains his trading system, and get this, actually trades it - and here's the kicker to silence the skeptics - then publicly posts all of his raw results. You might have to re-read that a few times, and his compact book, before your critical faculties can assimilate the facts that your brain can otherwise easily handle. But, before you can dwell on accepting the speed with which Joe conveys his system, your attention is immediately swung 90 degrees into the realm of character building. If the first part of the book can be likened to building a winning race car, then you could metaphorically treat the second part of the book as building racing skills. Let's face it, in a real race, an untrained amateur will wrap a million dollar race car around a pole, while the professional racer will send the same car across the finish line. Joe openly discusses the oft-ignored or possibly avoided missing link to successful trading, or perhaps more generally, to success itself: it involves character building work. This entails establishing both technical mastery and then expending the effort it takes to develop a work regimen until you are able to implement your new-found academic knowledge of Five Bullets consistently in the real world. Joe's efforts spanned several years of system discovery, culminating in 9 months of transition during which he ramped up and engaged Five Bullets in ever more stressful stages of implementation, until finally attaining the confidence, discipline, and honesty to trade successfully in the real world. Honesty? You can't make money deluding yourself, bending the rules or giving in to greed or fear, and as I have mentioned at the outset, Joe publicly posts his results, to keep himself real and sober.

You need perspective, which the book lays out well along the way. Beating the professional million and billion dollar Forex traders employed by banks and other financial institutions and taking money away from them trading in the "pit" will require absorbing every sentence, word, and letter of Five Bullets, and implementing it - which will take work, or else deciding Forex is not for you. There is nothing wrong with either of these decisions. Only doing anything that falls in between them will amount to a waste of time and money.

If you decide to become a professional a trader, more than just teaching you Five Bullets, Joe teaches you how to become that "pit" professional and make money with his system. Joe's book goes beyond explaining a Forex trading system by also taking the unusual steps of trading and documenting it, and then distances itself from the rest by both explaining the commitment involved and how to acquire the professional demeanor to successfully implement the system. Factual, honest, real, practical, and profitable. Five Bullets. Five stars.

Take the good with the bad
By Amazon Customer
The book is very short, although not very simple. It is a short term, quasi-scalping strategy. It is mostly centered on support/resistance reversals combined with stochastic divergence. Day trading is risky, and this strategy should not be used with real cash until you have back tested and forward tested it to "destruction." The method trades off of 1 minute charts, in the first few hours of the London open.

It is one of the cheaper books on the market, but there are some good insights in the book even if you choose to never trade the method. Personally, I do not think I will ever trade this method. I do not have 2-3 hours every afternoon to be on my computer waiting for all the right signals. He stresses knowing what you are doing before pulling the trigger, admitting that he never played with live cash before tested and perfecting his strategy for nine months before hand. This is a good lesson for new traders. Just because you don't make money in the first month on your demo account does not mean your methodology is flawed, perhaps just your execution of your strategy. He also stresses knowing yourself and your strengths/weaknesses so you can tailor this or any trade strategy for your liking. He does feel you could use this system all the way out to the one hour charts...again that is a lot of waiting, but possible in his estimation.

Joe stresses using money management, though after reading it and checking his website his rules seem a bit less hard and fast. Sometimes he will use a specific size and other times he will double, triple or quadruple it, it seems. I may be wrong here if I am reading his website wrong, but money management that doubles up or more to get back to even can be very dangerous. His stated goal is to walk away if he loses 1% in a day, at 0.2% risk per standard trade with a 10 pip stop loss. Profit taking is usually 15 pips, with a goal of 0.5% account gain per day.

This book reinforced to me the need to test and feel comfortable with your strategies before you ever pull the trigger in real life, and it also helped nail down the idea of stochastic divergences. Combining all the moving averages (1 EMA with 2 SMAs) and then Bollinger bands and stochastics makes for a demanding strategy. Focused individuals need only apply.

So, I give the book 3 stars because it has some good things: the price of book, reinforcement of preparation, ideas of retracements, knowing yourself and picking a strategy that fits your style, and explanation of divergences. These things are worth the price of the book and will help me in my overall trading. The less good things are the complexity of the strategy, the extensive amount of time it requires, the high level of stress involved, and lastly the ambiguity of the trade setups.

The Colossus and Other Poems, by Sylvia Plath

With this startling, exhilarating book of poems, which was first published in 1960, Sylvia Plath burst into literature with spectacular force. In such classics as "The Beekeeper's Daughter," "The Disquieting Muses," "I Want, I Want," and "Full Fathom Five," she writes about sows and skeletons, fathers and suicides, about the noisy imperatives of life and the chilly hunger for death. Graceful in their craftsmanship, wonderfully original in their imagery, and presenting layer after layer of meaning, the forty poems in The Colossus are early artifacts of genius that still possess the power to move, delight, and shock.

"[Her poems] have that exquisite, heart-breaking quality about them that has
made Sylvia Plath our acknowledged Queen of Sorrows, the spokeswoman for our most
private, most helpless nightmares. . . . Her poetry is as deathly as it is impeccable;
it enchants us almost as powerfully as it must have enchanted her." --Joyce Carol Oates,

"Sylvia Plath's eye is sharp . . . and her wits responsive to what she sees." --Richard Howard,Poetry

"...The Colossus, which appeared earlier in England to unusual acclaim [was] her first volume to be published in America. Certainly the praise bestowed on her by British critics is warranted; Sylvia Plath is indeed a rare talent and a consummate craftsman...her powerful poems crackle and smolder with energy."--Guy Owen, Books Abroad

"She steers clear of feminine charm, deliciousness, gentility, supersensitivity and the act of being a poet. She simply writes good poetry."--Al Alvarez, London Observer

Plath's model of poetic craft
By Paul-John Ramos
In a well-known 1962 radio interview with Peter Orr of the British Council, Sylvia Plath downplayed her achievements in 'The Colossus' by explaining that she was 'bored' with the poems. By this time, she had entered the period of freer forms and dazzling imagery that fueled 'Ariel,' a volume now securing her legacy.

Plath died at a young age and might have changed her mind about 'The Colossus' poems had she lived long enough to reevaluate them. Fortunately, her public sees a great deal of the collection's value, at least in terms of its refinement and precision. Even when disregarding its subject matters, 'The Colossus' can be viewed as a woman's treatise on the poetic art.

First published in 1960, 'The Colossus & Other Poems' offers forty titles, many of which were written at the Yaddo artists' colony in Saratoga Springs, New York, and published in such magazines as The New Yorker, The Atlantic Monthly, and Encounter. The poems do not follow a specific order, but are arranged to supply contrasts in mood. Several of Plath's best known poems, including 'Night Shift,' 'The Colossus,' 'The Disquieting Muses,' 'The Beekeeper's Daughter,' and 'The Stones,' can be found in this 84-page collection.

On the surface, Plath's early poetry looks nave. Her stanzas are always flush left with capital letters. The number of lines per stanza is usually consistent. Her metrics are flawless. But when examining the poems repeatedly, it becomes clear that Plath's work has manifold meanings; how deeply we see is based on how deeply we're willing to look. Even in simple narratives like 'Sow,' 'The Bull of Bendylaw,' and 'Snakecharmer,' Plath seems to be winking at us through her underlying ideas on human relationships.

Perhaps the strongest element of Plath's verse is its compactness. For such a range of images and emotions, her poems are quite short, rarely lasting beyond two pages. By her mid-to-late twenties, Plath had already disposed of excess, working powerful ideas into taut lines and stanzas. She had also completely mastered techniques such as 'internal' rhyme, alliteration, and enjambment, helped by her love of Shakespeare, Donne, Yeats, Auden, and other immortals.

Plath's choice of 'The Colossus' as her focal poem is interesting, since female oppression does not seem a prevailing theme of this volume. 'The Colossus' is a poem of thirty lines, the first-person account of a woman who must serve as caretaker to the Colossus of Rhodes, a crumbling monument for god Helios. This poem foresees the later Plath of 'Daddy,' 'Lady Lazarus,' and 'The Moon and the Yew Tree,' where she openly rebels against a society that has confined women to limited roles.

Signs of the later Plath are also noticeable in poems such as 'Lorelei,' 'The Ghost's Leavetaking,' 'Full Fathom Five,' and 'The Stones.' These poems are intensely personal, stem from Plath's distinctly feminine voice, and seamlessly combine the real with the subconscious. The only factor working against this volume is the repetitiveness of Plath's imagery as her poems roll on: we are shown oceans, the Moon, and rocks a few times too many. Still, this can be forgiven with the variety of form and approach that Plath offers us. Even if we are looking at a sea or rock for the umpteenth time, we are never looking at it in exactly the same way.

'The Colossus & Other Poems' is too frequently judged as a testing ground for 'Ariel' rather than as a mature collection in its own right. The fact that 'Ariel' became a posthumous sensation hasn't helped 'The Colossus' at all, but it has luckily held its ground amongst readers. I have to claim myself as a member of the group who prefers these poems over 'Ariel.' As a person interested in new ways to utilize old ideas, I am fascinated by how Plath used strict forms as a foundation for her modern creative energies.

Those who have read 'The Colossus' may recall a Vintage softcover edition with blue and orange bars on its cover. In 1998, Vintage International made cosmetic changes; while the inside retains its large typeface, the cover is now in orange, black, and cream with a famous photograph of Plath sitting with her typewriter atop a stone barrier in Yorkshire. This edition and past releases are available just about everywhere, along with her 'Ariel' poems, prose, and published journals.

does not make the art of writing good poems seem easy
By J. Le
The Colossus," from what I understand, was Plath's first published collection of poetry. During this early phase of Plath's career, she still treated the act of writing poetry as a laborious and painstaking process, often diligently lookig up words in the thesaurus and then inserting many synonyms of one word into a single composition. This rather pedantic attitude toward poetry shows in these poems, many of which devoutly adhere to difficult rhyme schemes (albeit frequently using slant rhymes) and all of which are marked by a studied attention to detail, both visual and sonic. These poems simply don't *soar* the way the free-verse poems in "Ariel" (Plath's second book) do; they are just not as vibrant or as lively as her later work. These are bleak poems, characterized by a wealth of vivid tactile detail, but somewhat lacking in color and movement. Plath frequently uses the terza-rima rhyme scheme that Dante patented, as though to suggest that life, for her, is a slow, laborious plod into (or through?) hell. In this book, Plath shows that she can write good poems, but she does not make the art of writing good poems seem easy.

I do not, however, mean to imply that this is not a useful book for aspiring poets to read. It is, doubtless, a very important book to read if one wishes to understand how Plath developed into the brilliant, oracular voice that spouted "Ariel." And since Sylvia Plath started writing poetry seriously at a very early age, it is perhaps unfair to dismissively refer to this book -- which she published at the ripe old age of 25 -- as her "early work." There are many remarkable things about this book, not the least of which is the way Plath elevates mundane topics (e.g., men working the night shift, or prize pigs) to the level of high poetry, armoring them with an impervious Dante-esque dignity. To Plath, even the smallest things in life are worthy of attention.

Achieving Harmony through Conflict: Plath's Word-Sculptures
By Thomas E. Defreitas
Sylvia Plath's initial volume of poetry is very much in the formalistic style that was prevalent in the 1950s, but she brings to verse-making a "diction that is galvanized against inertia" (to quote Marianne Moore in a different context), a heavily alliterative, percussive idiom in which we discern kinship to Dylan Thomas and Gerard Manley Hopkins.
In "Hardcastle Crags," we have an analogue for a woman's heels against the pavement: "Flintlike, her feet struck / Such a racket of echoes." We have the slovenly slush of the tide at Point Shirley, where the poet's grandmother "kept house / Against what the sluttish, rutted sea could do." We have in other slant-rhymed terza-rima, and intricate stanza shapes reminiscent of Richard Wilbur and his lyric called "Beasts."
And has anyone captured the somnolent wakefulness of "the chilly no-man's-land of five o'clock in the morning" better than Sylvia Plath in "The Ghost's Leavetaking"?
There are poems about mushrooms, moles, and men in black. There is a homage to the artist Leonard Baskin, renowned as a maker of woodcuts. A keen visual sense in these poems leads us not to be surprised when we learn that Plath worked well as a painter of watercolours.
Her second pre-posthumous volume, "Ariel," is perhaps more famous for its unselfsparing chronicle of a crashing marriage and of suicidal depression. Its fiercely unfettered cadences and controversial images attracted immediate attention, praise and opprobrium. But this reviewer feels that the poems of "Colossus" represent the superior achievement, possessing a technique and a sonic command surpassed by precious few poets of our age.
