A prose comic book.

A comic book series with comic books heroas and villains. A fun read, but the battles start to get repeititive after a while: bad guys can't hit a barn with an Uzi from 10 paces while good guys can shoot the eye out of a gnat with a pistol at 200 yards (except for the main villian, who they can't hit at all, superheros debvelop new powers as needed and can usee them well as soon as they appear, at least one deus exes a machina in every fight. This, coupled with repeated reminders that our hero is a pubescent nerd who puts consideration of others at about 76 on his priority list made me finally give up. But if you like comic books, you may find this series better than I.

The course was completely, ridiculously botched up by our school, but this book didn't help either. Its a little cheaper than other options, but the price does not reflect the quality of this book. Its only good for kindling or paper weight. RIP tree that died making this book. I hope you both find new careers Mr Stock and Watson.

About the Author
Ajay D. Kshemkalyani is an associate professor in the Department of Computer Science, at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He was awarded his PhD in Computer and Information Science in 1991 from The Ohio State University. Before moving to academia, he spent several years working on computer networks at IBM Research Triangle Park. In 1999, he received the National Science Foundation's CAREER Award. He is a senior member of the IEEE, and his principal areas of research include distributed computing, algorithms, computer networks, and concurrent systems. He currently serves on the editorial board of Computer Networks. Mukesh Singhal is Full Professor and Gartner Group Endowed Chair in Network Engineering in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Kentucky. He was awarded his PhD in Computer Science in 1986 from the University of Maryland, College Park. In 2003, he received the IEEE Technical Achievement Award, and currently serves on the editorial boards for the IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems and the IEEE Transactions on Computers. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, and his principal areas of research include distributed systems, computer networks, wireless and mobile computing systems, performance evaluation, and computer security.

A very good organized book

The whole structure of this text is really good. At beginning, the model of distributed system is introduced, which provides me the basic knowledge to reason with the distributed system. Based on this, many fundamental algorithms are introduced. Although the algorithms are given in pseudocode, it makes me understand the wisdom behind these algorithms more directly. After the model and algorithms, various interesting topics in the area of distributed system are introduced. Based on the understanding of previously introduced knowledge, I really find this part inspiring. If you are interested in the area of distributed system, you really should read this book.

As advanced CS books go, this one's a taker.

Excellent content, presented lucidly. Complex matter of course and not written for entertainment but to learn a trade/profession. Good balance of theory and practical examples. Only fly in ointment is the fact that good amount of examples have subtle errors in them. Probably confusing for a student. And I think they have an errata out.

Not what I expected it to be...

Taking God Seriously by J. I. Packer was not at all what I expected it to be.

I have read a couple of other Packer books. I have thoroughly enjoyed everything that I have read from him in the past, so when this new book became available through Christian Audio, I was happy to listen to it in order to write a review.

Having read these other books by Packer, I was expecting this book to deal with big thoughts of how we need to take God seriously. I was ready to soak in some over-arching themes on the importance of really listening to God and doing what He says.

My first surprise came when he started talking extensively about issues in the Anglican church. Not only did I not know that Packer was Anglican, I had also never seen him refer to any current denominational issues. This book contains numerous references to current issues that are plaguing the Anglican church and many other churches in the world today. Much of this book felt like an address to others in the Anglican church to ... well ... take God seriously.

The next surprise that this book delivered was related to the content. Sure, he addressed some issues that I expected, like repentance, but he also addressed some issues that I didn't expect, like church, baptism and communion. Even though I didn't necessarily agree with everything he said, I also didn't find myself disagreeing with anything he said either. I found the information landing on very common ground and very Biblical, at the same time. But what made this surprise content really enlightening was that while I was listening to it, I found myself realizing that I hadn't been taking Baptism or Communion as seriously as I should, and that the question of taking God seriously couldn't really be dealt with until these issues were addressed.

If you've never encountered a book by J.I. Packer, this is a great place to start. He has a straight-forward, no-nonsense style of writing that I find refreshing. He doesn't beat around the bush, he goes straight to the point, and he brought this direct style of writing, which I've normally encountered in his theological works, into this current, culturally relevant book.

Important Truths we need to be reminded of!

If you've ever read any of Packer's books, you know that he is a serious-minded intellectual theologian. And this book is no different. No-frills, straight-forward, says-it-like-it-is type of tone. Although this particular book is written with a slight Anglican slant, Packer remains very objective in his deliverance of the facts so that they can apply to all evangelical faiths.

Packer wrote this book out of concern for the trends in his own church - namely, that many Christians are immature in the faith due to theological and spiritual undernourishment and therefore have become sluggish, viewing the facts of faith as unimportant. However, I think we all would agree that this trend can be seen in all evangelical circles. Thus, this book was written to help all evangelicals mature in their faith.

Packer takes Christians through the definitions and implications of taking Faith seriously, taking Doctrine seriously, taking Christian Unity seriously, taking the Church seriously, taking the Holy Spirit seriously, taking Baptism seriously, and taking the Lord's Supper seriously.

Although my church practices some doctrines differently than Packer's church, I did glean a lot by reading through the different chapters. It was good to be reminded of the definitions that have become so common-place in my life and to be renewed in my mind about each one of them as being extremely valuable and important in my Christian walk. The chapter on the Holy Spirit was particularly moving.

I would recommend this book to Christians who want to dig deeper in one or several areas of faith listed above. Maybe hearing about unity has become so common-place that you've lost the sense of what it really means for you and your church body. Or maybe you've been to so many baptisms that they have become ritualistic instead of meaningful. You might want to just read those particular chapters to renew your mind about the importance of those things.

What a gift to come across Lee Harris and this book. It can be a front to back read, or an opportunity to just flip to a page and read something that one needs to be reminded of on any given day. This book, along with the recordings found on Lee Harris Energy website has considerably enhanced my life. Heartfelt wisdom for everyone

This is a thoughtfully put together book. I almost wrote a review after had only read the introduction. In it Lee writes "I have learnt so much over the years, and my only hope for anyone engaging with channeled material is that they use the insights and ideas presented to remember their own power, rather than give a power to spirit that is greater than we give to our humanity."
This book is nothing short of empowering heart wisdom which everyone can use at any time. Thats priceless.

Neil Gershenfeld, Ph.D., is an associate professor at MIT, the director of the Media Lab's Physics and Media Group, and codirector of the Things that Think consortium. Gershenfeld has written for "Wired" and for other technology publications, and he lives in Boston. He is the author of several books, including "When Things Start to Think".

Good Book, But Beware of the Reissue Edition

Please note that this review pertains only to the paperback "reissue edition" and not the 1999 hardcover. The content of the book itself, which deserves its own review, is excellent. I am truly impressed at how much material and insight Gershenfeld has collected in a single slim volume.

When I saw that the book was being reissued as a less-expensive paperback, I assumed that it would have a few minor corrections and a soft cover. Even if it didn't have any corrections (and it appears not to), I'd have been satisfied.

However, the reissue I received, bought as new directly from Amazon, is clearly a print-on-demand (POD) book (indeed, this one was printed in Lexington, KY, the day I ordered it). POD is not always a bad thing, but in this case, images and equations (and sometimes the text itself), all of which look great in the original hardcover edition, have become grainy and look as though they have been printed from a compressed image-based (i.e., scanned) source as opposed to the original files. The effect is more pronounced on some pages than on others, but even a random flipping-through finds plenty of examples.

My book was also damaged during shipment, so the decision to return it was effectively made for me. Had it not been, though, the decision would have been a bit tougher. It's the right book, and a good book, but I can't get over how much it looks like a bootleg. If that doesn't bother you, go for it; it is a good book to have on your shelf. Otherwise, if you're trying to save some money on this title, try to find a used hardcover that's in decent shape.

OK for a read on a long journey

I bought the book (hard copy form) in a second hand bookshop while on holiday in Ireland. It is well printed on good quality paper and my copy is noted as 'reprinted 2003'.

I have several criticisms:

- It is mistitled. It does not discuss "the *nature* of mathematical modeling" of physical systems. It does give a brief review of numerous mathematical techniques relevant in mathematical modeling of physical systems. It also discusses a few relevant aspects of computer programming.

- The coverage of any individual topic is superficial, covering only a few pages. If you already know about a topic, what the author says makes sense. But if it's new to you, you'll probably only get a general impression of what the topic is all about.

- The book does not touch on large areas of significance in mathematical modeling. For example, although the first page asks "How would you describe ... Highway traffic during a rush hour?", queuing theory and the mathematical analysis of discrete event systems do not seem to be mentioned.

But having said all that, I felt I had my money's worth and enjoyed reading it on a long ferry trip and being reminded of mathematical methods that I had used years ago - a bit of nostalgia.

Waste of time...

Don't get me wrong I really love the characters of this series. It just seems as if this is being stretched beyond what is necessary. Jessica and Jaylyn obviously care for one another so why are they portrayed as being too immature to see it? I hope book 4 wraps this drama up, smh.

I give this book 5 stars. Jessica and Jaylyn has been through alot, however, their actions toward each other reminds of what someone's goes through in real life and both their sturborness

REPEAT, REPEAT, REPEAT

I was super excited when I received my e-mail informing me the 3rd installment was available. That is we're the excitement ends, I stayed up all night reading the book and I felt like it was an exact REPEAT of book 1 & 2. Another one time sex act with Jaylen produces another unplanned unsure pregnancy. Nothing New. Jessica finally decides she wants to stand up for herself but she does it to the person who does not deserve it. James was mislead, lied too, and broken hearted all by Jessica but Jessica is Pissed off. Makes no sense at all. Why all the J starting names Shaquanda, Jaylen, James, Jessica etc.. not needed.. James should of had a different name. All in all I saw no real growth in the characters from book 2 and book 3 is a REPEAT. Not impressed.
