Great for special education!
By Michelle
My husband is a special education teacher. He bought this to present to his students. It does a great job at giving special education students access to the content that other students will get from longer stories about the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. It is very easily readable, and it has great illustrations to depict the way Martin Luther King's life was during the time of the civil rights movements. His students really enjoyed the text and illustrations, and the book also provided them with a very convenient timeline of the important dates of the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. My husband and I will be added this book to our daughters' book collection for when they are older.

My daughter loves this book
By frequent Amazon shopper
My five-year-old daughter was fascinated with this book even though it didn't include fairies, animals, or dinosaurs. I was very happy with the information they presented which gives some basic information about Dr. King while not treating his death in such a way that might overly upset sensitive children like mine. The illustrations are wonderfully done and my daughter looked them over carefully for a long time. It is a wonderful opportunity to launch more discussions about racism and the way we treat other people because of their gender, race, or religion.

Excellent first biography
By A Customer
The entire "A picture book of..." biography series byDavid Adler is outstanding. Perfect for lower elementary studentsdoing their first real report. Makes a great read-aloud for non-readers as they are easily completed in one sitting. They are loaded with information including a timeline of important dates. The illustrations in this book are not cartoon-like as in his other biographies of Washington or Lincoln, but are appealing to young children.

Review
"I thought the models in the books were well thought out and adequately explained" (Computer Shopper February 2002)

Review

"The Data Model Resource Book, Revised Edition, Volume 1 is the best book I?ve seen on data architecture. It does not merely address the top levels of a data architecture (Zachman Framework row one or two); it provides both common and industry-specific logical models as well as data designs that may be customized to meet your requirements. The end result is a is a rich framework whose models span the higher and lower levels of a data architecture, including high-level models, logical models, warehouse designs, star schemas, and SQL scripts. You can use the data models, designs, and scripts as templates or starting points for your own modeling, an introduction to subject areas you might not be familiar with, a reference to validate your existing models, and a help to building an enterprise data architecture. The book provides techniques to transform models from one level to another, as well as tips and techniques for getting the appropriate levels of abstraction in the models. Instance tables (sample data) help bring the models to life. I have customized and used the models from the first edition on many projects in the last two years?it is an invaluable resource to me."
--Van Scott, President, Sonata Consulting, Inc.

"Len Silverston has produced an enormously useful two-volume compendium of generic (but not too generic) data models for an extensive set of typical enterprise subject areas, and for various industries that any data modeler will likely encounter at some point in his or her career. The material is clearly written, well organized, and goes below the obvious to some of the more perverse and difficult information requirements in an enterprise. This is an invaluable resource for doing one's homework before diving into any modeling session; if you can't find it here, there is certainly a very similar template that you can use for just about any situation with which you might be faced."
--William G. Smith, President, William G. Smith & Associates

"In today's fast-paced e-oriented world, it is no longer acceptable to bury business constraints in hard-to-change data structures. Data architects must comprehend complex requirements and recast them into data architecture with vision for unforeseen futures. Len's models provide an outstanding starting point for novice and advanced data architects for delivering flexible data models. These models position an organization for the business rule age. Their proper implementation and customization allows the organization to externalize and manage business policies and rules so that the business can proactively change itself. In this way, the data architecture, based on Len's models and procedures for customizing them, becomes by design the foundation for business change."
--Barbara von Halle, Founder, Knowledge Partners, Inc., Co-author of Handbook of Relational Database Design

"These books are long overdue and a must for any company implementing universal data models. They contain practical insights and templates for implementing universal data models and can help all enterprises regardless of their level of experience. Most books address the needs for data models but give little in the way of practical advice. These books fill in that void and should be utilized by all enterprises."
--Ron Powell, Publisher, DM Review

"Businesses across the world are demanding quality systems that are built faster by IT shops. This book provides a foundation of patterns for data modelers to expand upon and can cut days, if not weeks, off a project schedule. I have found The Data Model Resource Book, Revised Edition, Volume 1 valuable as a resource for my modeling efforts at L.L. Bean, Inc. and feel it is an essential component in any modelers toolkit."
--Susan T. Oliver, Enterprise Data Architect, L.L. Bean, Inc.

"I was first introduced to The Data Model Resource Book three years ago when I was hired by a firm who wanted an enterprise data model. This company did not believe the dictum that ?all companies are basically the same;? they felt they were somehow unique. After a little analysis with Len Silverston's help, we found that we were actually quite a bit the same: we had customers, accounts, employees, benefits, and all the things you'd find in any corporation. All we had to do was adapt the product component of Len's book and we were ready to move ahead with a great framework for all of our data. A CD-ROM that accompanies the book provided scripts to build the model in Oracle very quickly. We then began mapping all of our detailed data types to the enterprise model and, voila, we could find a place for all of those various spellings and misspellings of Account Number.
Volume 2 of this revised edition provided even more exciting features: models of industry-specific data. I began to see interesting patterns that permeated this volume. For example, a reservation is a reservation, whether you're an airline, a restaurant, or a hotel. (We even have something similar in the oil industry--the allocation.)
Another concept from the book that has changed my thinking and vocabulary is the word "party." I recently managed a project in which an employee could also function as a customer and as an on-line computer user. The team was in disagreement regarding a name for this entity; but after checking The Data Model Resource Book, we realized that here we had a party playing three roles.
Whether your job is to jump-start a data warehouse project or borrow ideas for any subject area in your next operational database, I highly recommend The Data Model Resource Books, Revised Edition, Volumes 1 and 2 as your bible for design."

Excellent Treatment on Data Modeling for Durable Goods
By Darrell Teague
This is an excellent introductory to mid-level text on best-practices in enterprise data modeling.

Coming from a logistics/commerce consulting background, I can confirm that the recommendations are excellent.
The author clearly points out some anti-patterns that I have seen in many companies and, conversely, good models largely structured around "durable goods" businesses (selling, shipping and billing for material goods - though there are some considerations for services).

I would say this book is a "must read" for any business analyst, DBA, data-architect to prevent all-too-common errors seen in leading "CRM" and related systems that, given the acronym alone, clearly missed the boat on the concepts of sales/contact management systems.

It was only given four stars out of five as it does not really address more timely considerations of big-data, the diagrams could be more professional (and do not conform to any standard) and lastly the publisher seems to be squeezing every penny out of selling the CD and other volumes with no set discounts, etc.

Must have resource if you ever need to design a database.
By technopoetic
I've read a lot of Data Modelling books that treat the subject from a very hypothetical perspective, teaching theory, but giving no real, practical examples. This book is completely different. There's a little bit of theory, mainly exposed through explanations of real world models, but this book excels in that it contains real, working examples of data models for many different enterprise situations.

It's a wonderful resource for when you just need some pointers on how to model an invoicing module, or how to model sales orders... Extremely helpful.

Well done third volume
By Erik Gfesser
Incredibly well done follow-up to the first two volumes of Silverston's data model series (see my reviews for "The Data Model Resource Book Volume 1 (Revised Edition): A Library of Universal Data Models for All Enterprises" and "The Data Model Resource Book Volume 2 (Revised Edition): A Library of Universal Data Models by Industry Types"). As discussed in the introduction to this book, while the first volume answered the question "Where can we find a book showing a standard way to model common data model structures?" and the second volume extended the template models presented in the first volume by adding additional data model constructs that are industry specific, this third volume answers the question "How can we quickly extend and customize these models for our organization and our needs to quickly develop any data model with higher quality, even if it is specific to our enterprise?"

The patterns that Silverston and Agnew present are categorized into chapters entitled "Setting Up Roles: What Parties Do", "Using Roles: How Parties Are Involved", "Hierarchies, Aggregations, and Peer-to-Peer Relationships: The Organization of Similar Data", "Types and Categories: The Classification of Data", "Status: The States of Data", "Contact Mechanisms: How to Get in Touch", and "Business Rules: How Things Should Work". Each chapter is well laid out, similar in style to other books of this genre such as "Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software" by Erich Gamma, Richard Helm, Ralph Johnson, and John Vlissides. In this text, each pattern is laid out in its own section that answers the following questions: "Why Do We Need This Pattern?", "How Does This Pattern Work?", "When Should This Pattern Be Used?", and "What Are the Weaknesses of the Pattern?"

In addition, an aspect of this book that this reviewer especially appreciates is a presentation of each pattern at different levels. While the data management industry habitually refers to conceptual, logical, and physical data models, because there are widely different views as to the definition and purpose behind each of these types of data models (this reviewer is all too familiar with this inconsistency from his consulting engagements), the authors devised four levels of patterns that span from the most static and the more specific (Level 1) to the most flexible and more "generalized" (Level 4). The authors explain that the two key purposes of a data model are (1) "to illustrate and communicate information requirements, and (2) "to provide a sound foundation for a database design", and because these purposes can obviously be at odds with each other, depending on the stakeholders involved, care needs to be taken during the modeling process to determine appropriateness of approach.

While this reviewer offers no suggestions for alternative terminology, the decision of the authors to use the term "generalization" to describe the transformation of very specific data model structures to those which more flexibly support data requirements is interesting (especially given their explanation that they chose to do so since the object-oriented community uses the perhaps more intuitive term "abstraction" in a different way that has a different meaning) because this reviewer is well aware that software developers also use the term when referring to an object class superset that has object class "specializations". But despite this small matter, the consistent focus of the authors on the purpose of each level of data model presented throughout the text for each group of patterns (always discussing Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3, and sometimes discussing Level 4) is highly valued by this reviewer, especially when the authors discuss these levels in relationship to the Zachman Framework and other data model classification schemes.

This reviewer also enjoyed the last two chapters, entitled "Using the Patterns" and "Socializing the Patterns", in which the authors answer the questions "How do I use, apply, and/or implement these patterns in my enterprise?", "What is an appropriate balance between requiring adherence to the patterns and allowing them to be used completely optionally and used if and when they are helpful to the modeler/designer?", "How do you get your enterprise and various people in the enterprise to adopt these patterns?", and "What types of policies or principles regarding use of the patterns would be most appropriate to get the most benefit from these patterns?"

In the first of these last two chapters (Chapter 9), the authors demonstrate how the patterns can be used to create different data models that meet different needs, using the different levels of patterns as interchangeable components and combining them to solve common data modeling challenges for circumstances surrounding the building of prototyping and scoping data models, application data models, enterprise data models, data warehouse data models, and master data management (MDM) data models. In the list of additional considerations when using generalized patterns at the end of this chapter, this reviewer appreciates their remark that "generalized structures move the change process from the typical 'data architect to DBA to developer to tester' process to a data change process, and often organizations have no formal process for data change like they have for application change" and that "this can be addressed with organizational commitment to flexible data modeling structures", especially because this reviewer experienced firsthand the impact on culture when implementing database change management processes at his last two clients.

Chapter 10 addresses getting these patterns accepted and used appropriately, discussing in detail many of the objections that one might face in the workplace as well as what the authors see as key to success in this regard: (1) understand motivations and work toward meeting them, (2) develop a clear, common, compelling vision, (3) develop trust, and (4) manage conflict effectively. In addition to understanding the motivations of others, the authors also indicate that understanding one's own motivations is also important. While this last chapter is focused on the data model patterns discussed throughout the text, in the opinion of this reviewer the psychological aspects discussed are applicable to a much broader context in the workplace, and it can only help the industry if more authors choose to address such matters. Well recommended book to all data architects and other data management professionals.

Open the Treasure Within
By Amazon Customer
Do yourself what may be the biggest favor of your life: open your heart and mind to the wisdom in this book. Citing the Bhagavad Gita, the Bible, the Gnostic Gospels and many others, the author reveals the essence they all have in common: the desire to reconnect us--permanently--with God/ our Higher Selves/ the kingdom of Heaven that is within us. Step by step, the author shows us how to choose our Higher Selves rather than acting out of our Lower Selves. Then the author heals this apparently dualistic way of thinking by showing us how to integrate the 'two' selves. I would consider the price of the book worth the price just for the acronym he gives to the word 'fear.'

The Seven Victories of the title are accomplishments that you, as a Divine Child, can attain. With stunning simplicity the author shows the reader the battle that goes on within each of us--and how to bring it to a peaceful end. Want peace in the world? Begin by learning how to achieve peace within. He does this by means of 7 steps to claiming our victories. I plan to concentrate on a different 'victory' each day of the week; since there are seven, this works out perfectly. At the end of each day, I shall journal the results of this focus. By doing this for an extended period of time, I hope to internalize the wisdom in this book so that I can live forevermore in contact with the Divine Within.

The teacher is here. Are you ready?

filled with wisdom
By David P O'Neill
As an author myself, I'm aware that there are two different ways to write a book. One is to come up with the words yourself, using your own limited intelligence. The other is to basically let the words come THROUGH you, from a HIGHER intelligence. I'm not talking about "channeling," but just the act of creating from a place of oneness rather than separation.

It was obvious to me that this book was of the latter kind- it came from a place of deep wisdom and higher intelligence within Michael Jones. Therefore, I would consider it "inspired"- born of spirit. This one thing alone makes the book a quality work.

Secondly, I was amazed at the amount of true wisdom. Sometimes you can get an idea about how wise an author is by the little things they say- the details, the commentary. Not only are the major points of the book very insightful, but the explanation and detail was excellent as well.

Finally, as Michael Jones points out, there's an old saying that "When the student is ready, the teacher appears." Well, I was ready for a spiritual breakthrough, and this book definitely helped to give it to me.

I've always dealt with a lot of negative emotions like guilt, anger, and grief, and I now have a way of dealing with these kinds of emotions. Michael says that negative qualities (he calls them "lower attributes") always have an OPPOSITE ("higher attributes"). For example, there is love vs. hatred, strength vs. weakness, freedom vs. bondage, and so on. Basically, every "lower attribute" has an opposite, "higher attribute." This teaching has given me a framework to work with, and a greater clarity of purpose in terms of WHAT to do, and HOW and WHY to do it.

Basically, the book is amazing and I recommend it to anyone ready for a spiritual breakthrough.

Thanks, Michael.

Review
"Adventure... intrigue... philosophy... politics... you'll find it all in this fast-paced novel from Doug Casey and John Hunt. Most important, you'll find thoughts -- the kind of thoughts that will make you think too." --Bill Bonner (Author ofEmpire of DebtandMobs, Messiahs, and Markets)
"Speculatoruses the cover of a thrilling tale of international intrigue to provide an economic and moral defense of the much-maligned speculator and an economic and moral condemnation of those who profit via force and fraud. Doug Casey and John Hunt have provided an invaluable service to those looking for unique ways to spread the ideas of liberty." --Dr. Ron Paul
"Halfway between Frederick Forsyth'sDogs of Warand Ayn Rand'sFountainhead. The gold mine in the jungle, the mercenaries, and the child soldiers keep you turning the pages. A morality tale with modern twists." --John Mackey (Founder, Whole Foods Market and author ofConscious Capitalism)

"Speculatormay prove to be the first in a new genre of fiction. Give this book to all your friends and enemies." --John Hart (Author ofRedemption Road)

"Speculator will keep you thinking long past the conclusion and for years to come."--Robert Ringer (Author ofLooking Out for #1andWinning Through Intimidation)

"Speculatoris a roller-coaster lesson on the arcane world of gold-mine investing. An African revolution, massive fraud with massive profits and losses--the novel is such fun you don't notice how much you are learning. But, mostly, it is a good read with a unique protagonist." --Wendy McElroy (Author ofLiberty for Women)

"Move over John Galt and Humphrey Bogart,Speculatorhas created an old-fashioned hero with contemporary style and sex appeal. Expert cicerones lead us through the dark world of African mining and international finance. It is a riveting tale, perfect for a day at the beach or a long-winter's-night read. Pure gold." --Richard Harteis (Author ofMarathonand Publishing Director of Poets-Choice.com)

"Passionately pointed and provocative."--David Brin (Author ofEarthandThe Postman)

"Speculatorcombines the fast-paced action of a Dirk Pitt adventure story with the cerebral message of an Ayn Rand novel. The authors' knowledge of how markets, mining, and governments work is impressive, yet the book reads like a day at the beach. Crisp, intelligent, and witty, this new adventure series might even out-Rand Rand." --Jo Ann Skousen (Professor of English Literature, Chapman University)

The book's philosophical revelations, smoothly weaved into the fabric of the action and adventure, give it the sort of credentials you might find in a novel by Ayn Rand. That makes it the sort of book that will not only keep you up late at night--I read it in just a couple of sittings, which I almost never do--but that you'll want to share with people you care about, especially children and grandchildren. --David Galland, The Passing Parade.
"Doug Casey and John Hunt have delivered a thumping good adventure yarn, while simultaneously teaching a master class on how to navigate the high-risk/high-reward junior mining industry. This is more than a classic action novel. Speculator is an instruction manual on how to live a virtuous and productive life in the modern age."--Kevin Virgil, Editor, Frontera News

"Many of the important questions facing society today are also dealt with in this novel.Speculator is a suspenseful, well-written novel--and, more importantly, one that will make you stop and think."--Al Korelin, Host, TheKoreanReport

"Doug brings the clear writing style that made him a bestselling investment author to fiction. Speculator is a page-turner, full of knowledge and insights that Doug Casey and his coauthor, John Hunt, have learned from real-world speculations and travels around the globe. The book rings true because they have lived the life."--Adrian Day, author of Investing in Resources, Chairman, Adrian Day Asset Management

"A well-written and exciting adventure for intelligent people. In the confrontation between the peaceful and creative persons, and those whose actions embrace violence, fraud, and other forms of dishonesty, this novel provides a microcosm of a world that reaches far beyond the African continent where it is set. It is a really good book!"--Butler Shaffer, author of Calculated Chaos
"Speculator is a terrific book. A gripping adventure story played out in a dramatic setting. It is also a smart and thoughtful book that is brimming with interesting facts and asking important philosophical questions."--Mark Ford, New York Times bestselling author, Editor, Creating Wealth.

"At last! A Harry Potter for adults!A double-deceptive conclusion leaves you eager for the next book to see where Charles Knight will take you!"--Thea Alexander, bestselling author of2150 AD

"Speculator is a wild ride, a philosophy in action tour de force that both excites the reader and invites him to examine all he thought he knew about the nature of man and the state. Casey and Hunt's vivid prose draws us in, while their unforgettable turns of phrase cement themselves in our mind. Speculator is a must read for anyone seeking to better understand the world around them and, by extension, their own place in it. Highly recommended." --Joel Bowman, Editor, Truth and Plenty

"Finally, a work that fuses sound, consistent philosophy with a highly readable, action-packed story. Against a landscape of artless fiction and stale, trite philosophies, Casey offers a refreshing perspective as only he can." --Anya Leonard, Editor, Classical Wisdom

"I expect Speculator will become a timeless classic. If you thought Atlas Shrugged was good, Speculator will blow you away." --Nick Giambruno, Senior Editor, InternationalMan.com

"Along come Doug Casey and John Hunt with their fantastic, riveting story, Speculator. Just as I could not put down Atlas Shrugged until I finished it, I simply was glued to my screen until I found out every jot and tittle of what happened to Charles Knight. This really is a magnificent novel." --Walter Block, PhD, Professor of Economics, Loyola University, author of Defending the Undefendable

"All too often in the world, fortunes are made and lost less by the genius of entrepreneurs than by the caprice of those who stifle, connive, and repress. Casey and Hunt weave a fine tale of a young man in search of success, but who must confront power and corruption along the way. The story entertains the reader while the lessons that emerge, both moral and economic, educate in profoundly important ways." --Lawrence W. Reed, President, Foundation for Economic Education (FEE).

"Savvy and searing, Speculator is a triumphant re-ascent of Atlas, reversing the Shrugand reentering the Randian arena with neurons ablaze. It fulfills Rand's promiseof a new heroic literature of liberty and enterprise and extends Doug Casey's masteryof investment amid the hooks and spikes of the new global leviathan."--George Gilder, Futurist, International bestselling author of The Scandal of Money

"Speculator offers the entertainment value of a good old American thriller: fast-paced, page-turning and addictive, with twists and surprises, packed with action, danger and adventure in the heart of the African bush. It has all the ingredients one needs in order to spend an enjoyable evening at home, with a good book and a brandy. It also provides a crash course in classical liberalism, in real-life economics and ethics.Ultimately, the added value of the book lies in the challenge it poses to conventional thinking and to the cookie-cutter moral values, predetermined and delivered to us from above."--Nat Vein, Gold and Liberty

"SPECULATOR was the most satisfying read I have had in years. I enjoy thrillers, but they are usually missing the true liberty perspective. Casey and Hunt bring brilliant arguments for individual sovereignty to a genuine page-turner. I am sharing this with my friends and to our network. I can hardly wait for Book 2." -- Foster Gamble, Thrive Movie and Movement

"Speculator can be read on a number of different levels. It's simultaneously a great adventure story - complete with death, love, and suspense, - a useful guide to speculation, and a philosophical commentary on some of the most important social topics of our world. Read Speculator, and no matter what you take from it, I guarantee you will be entertained."--Brian Leni,Junior Stock Review

From the Inside Flap
The original International Man and #1 New York Times bestselling author Doug Casey joins forces with Dr. John Hunt to create a new type of hero. Charles Knight is young, but he knows right from wrong. He's well educated because he decided to drop out of high school, and considered college a misallocation of both his time and money. Instead, he reads and listens, works and creates. He figured out that you can't become a Renaissance Man by sitting in a classroom. Charles Knight is a modern Count of Monte Cristo, the sort of hero we haven't seen since Atlas Shrugged. He is a leader, but with no interest in leading. A soldier of fortune who tries to avoid fighting. He becomes rich, famous, powerful, loved--and hated. He changes the course of world history as he follows his code.
Join Charles Knight on his quest to live a good life, an exotic life, a life of adventure. It all starts with Speculator.

Doug Casey and John Hunt Strike Gold!
By D. Buxman
Speculator is, quite simply, the best novel that I have read in the past three years and deserves better than a 5 star rating. It is a nuanced adventure that will offer the reader unique insights into topics as diverse as geology, capitalism, colonialism, junior gold mining investment and anarcho-capitalism. This wonderful book presents a freedom-based political/economic philosophy that is every bit as compelling and profound as that of Ayn Rand, at a much faster pace and without the laborious monologues.

I was lucky enough to purchase an advance copy of this book in July, and I pre-ordered the Kindle version so that I could make it a permanent part of my digital library, accessible to my college-aged kids for whom it is now required reading. Technical elements such as dialogue and character development are superb, and I can't wait to see how the heroes and villains develop in the planned sequels. Over two months after my first reading, I am still thinking about the themes that resonate throughout this book. I recommend it without reservation. Few novels have the potential to be life-changing vehicles, but this is one of them.

Stunning. Brilliant. Essential. Sound.
By Frank Porter Stansberry
Worthy in every respect as a must-read, modern companion to Atlas Shrugged. Rather than fleeing a world corrupted by coercion and fraud, Casey's heroes fight back with the tools of a speculator. This book resonates and educates, with concepts and ideas that will shock anyone educated in public schools, but unlike the Randian polemics of the 1950s, this is a modern thriller in style. The action is original. The dialogue is savvy. And the characters are just as real as a few of our mutual friends. I didn't put the book down for three sleepless nights -- not until I finished it. The end was unlike any other I've ever read. Brutal and real.

Superb fiction is always more true than not. And, with this tale, Doug shows his readers a side of reality most people have never considered... A view of modern life most people will find shocking, confounding, and challenging. Simply brilliant fiction and the best book I have read in a very long time. -- FPS

Good ideas clothed in very bad writing
By Jan Bardium
As much as I would like to recommend this book, and despite the fact that I agree with his libertarian views, this is a poorly written screed. Mr. Casey needs to learn how to write fiction before he touches the keyboard again. The point of fiction is to tell a story in a compelling way. There are techniques that good writers can learn to do this. He lectures, he doesn't tell a story and I got very tired, almost from the beginning, of being lectured to. He should learn to exemplify his political and economic points by showing us, not telling us. I tried to finish the book, but I got tired of clumsy dialog and pages of didactic pontification and quit. Ayn Rand he's not. The named reviewers praised the novel because of his libertarian theme in order to promote the ideas. But as fiction this book is a flop. Sorry for being so critical, but this heavy handed preaching doesn't do the movement any good.

Six Books of the Dead are known from the city of Akhmim and this second volume in the series presents two of them. Written during the late 1st century, the Papyrus of Hor (EA 10479) is one of the last Books of the Dead to have been produced in Egypt and its 38 spells and 33 vignettes provide a good insight into the thoughts and beliefs of the priestly class working in the temple of the god Min. Mosher explores the tradition of the Book of the Dead from Akhmim and comments on transcriptions of the spells. He also presents a photo facsimile of a parallel manuscript from Akhmim, the MacGregor papyrus owned by a woman called Tarepet.
