A Bilingual Bonanza!

This is a wonderful dual language book, among the best I've read. As a reader for the Denver Public Library and the Children's Museum of Denver, I've been pleased to present this book to many audiences since I first discovered it. In fact, this was the gift book that I presented to more than two dozen Head Start children on behalf of the library in the spring 2005. It was wonderful to see each child take away a copy for his/her personal library. The book is sparsely illustrated throughout, but the watercolor illustrations are nonetheless striking. The artist's use of a limited palette and the combination of a stark white background on many of the pages leave much room for the clever story, which builds to a satisfying resolution of friendship and reconciliation. The Spanish text is not difficult to read, even for the novice. However, the English language text is there for those uneasy about their Spanish language proficiency. I highly recommend this book for young readers, and I heartily encourage parents to add this text to their son or daughter's collection.

Cute story you won't mind reading over and over again!

Cute story in either language! My daughter is in a bilingual daycare, but we speak English at home. This book has both languages on each page, which helps make the translating easy. I learned Spanish back in high school, so it helps me remember the verb tenses and understand the more uncommon vocabulary. My daughter likes the pictures and the cadence in either language. A great, fun book and the best I've seen in two languages.

Only bilingual book that my kids like

My toddler son and 5-year-old daughter love when I read this book. It is funny and imaginative. The translations seem to work well. The illustrations are vibrant and I think they would work well in a classroom. This is the only bilingual book I own that my kids actually request often.

2 chapters are not current to the latest addition.

This book was for my Psych Class.. Here's the deal. Most chapters are included in this book. You have to search for the title not by the # for this reason for you assignments. Some chapters are totally different so you will need access to your college campus library to go to the reserve desk and check out your book for a couple hours for those days. It was worth the savings for me. I think only 2 chapters so far were different or not included. I have an A in my class. So there you go!

The reader is encouraged to crtical evaluate the theory and the theorists within an historical context. and to engage in self examination as well. It is an excelent text for students who are beganning to study theorys of personality.

That like 10 episode scripts had been prepared

"We now deliver you to a future that was created in the past--told as if we were in the present."

This statement from editor Lukas Kendall neatly sets the stage for a non-fiction narrative that nonetheless has all the trappings of an epic suspense novel, courtesy of author Preston Neal Jones.

The first fifty pages are devoted to what was going on behind the scenes between the cancellation of the original TV series in '69 and the film's go-ahead in '77-'78. Boy, does the first section clear up a lot of misconceptions this reader and now ardent Trekker had back then as a teenager. Who knew a ST2 series on a proposed 4th network was brewing? That like 10 episode scripts had been prepared?

It is also evident in the following two hundred pages that everyone from the producer to the director to the cast to the lowliest of support staff felt like kids again. They were all committed to something they truly believed in. They badly wanted it to come out right because hey, this is Star Trek, it's got to be done right. Forget the fans, we'll never forgive ourselves if it tanks.

"The main thing that we heard, the one constant that came from the front office was, 'Make that release date. Just make that release date. However you do it, whatever shape the film may be in, make the date. If you lose something, it's your judgment to do what you have to do. But we must not fail to make that date.'"

Sheer dogged bottom-line determination and then some on the part of everyone involved would be essential if they were to pull the picture off by the impossible December 7, 1979 release date. Which could have been a severe date of infamy for Paramount Pictures if not for the man behind the above-cited quote. If there is a Hero among many heroes in the picture's frenzied improvised creation, well, everyone mentioned that man, the director. Every one.

Robert Wise was pure glue. The guiding hand. The calming force. The rock.

There is a palpable sense of tension, pressure, anxiety and dread smoldering throughout the voluminous minutiae in which nothing is spared. Accordingly, there are times the reading becomes a cerebral chore what with the massive amounts of technical details alone—one of the drawbacks of an unabridged literary roadshow--and during the [infrequent!] times when it became too much I gave the text a surface scan. And for that reason alone it was such a treat whenever the comments of Sam Nicholson and Brian Longbotham, who are credited for "Production Kinetic Lighting Effects" are interspersed. A wise piece of editing! They are a regular Rosencrantz & Guildenstern hiding in the wings, wondering what exactly did this huge expanding Paramount universe want from them.

In that vein, the scope of the 'chronicle' and the way it is arranged is impressive, for it gives context to the evolving Star Trek phenomenon in real time and beyond. And there is something for everyone be they Trekkians or Jerry Goldsmithians or movie technicians; lovers of movies and moviemakers; readers of science fiction or watchers of science fiction films; or both, any and all.

I also feel some readers will be moved to rethink unfavorable first impressions of the film when it was released.

First instincts normally tell me to go all orthodox academic i.e. match what I'm reading to the cited sequence in the film and just fast forward and rewind and pause/stop my way through and that way I can get the full benefit of what I'm reading, and THEN when I'm done with the book and parsing the film watch the whole shebang as a pi�ce de r�sistance. In consideration of real life, practicality won out. Besides, I was psyched! And that's what a good book does, no? By the five hundredth page, I simply could not resist and rewatched ST:TMP. At the time it premiered, I had unfavorable first impressions. The "Director's Edition" has restored items absent from the theatrical presentation which vexed writers, actors, and techno personnel alike.

This viewing utterly blew me away. "Return to Tomorrow – The Filming of Star Trek: The Motion Picture" is a prime contributor to my delightful about-face.

If You Like To Look At The Pictures

...you won't find any. Not even a line drawing or pen-and-ink portrait. It's an "oral history" alright, with nothing but words to show for what amounts to a compilation of interviews with just about everyone who was anyone associated with the film. And yet it all works, in places with surprising insight and humility...consider what they were aiming for...while the sheer effort to conduct, collate, and convert to a comprehensive and chronological narrative all the memories and mental imagery makes the book worth the purchase price and merit a place on a "Trekkian's" bookshelf.

Reading it also has a perhaps-odd side effect: Now I wish to first re-view the original theatrical release, then its later "Director's Edition" that principally reflects Robert Wise's decades-after ability to digitally enhance and further edit and complete scenes of the film as originally intended and described in the book while not effectively hamstrung by the studio's demand to meet a release date.

The movie was complex in terms of the ambition it represented. However, the reason it did not turn out as excellent as the intention was is because emotions got in the way. The proof was Paramount choosing to give a ridiculous release date without conferring with those people involved in making it. Like McCoy said in the movie, "Jim your pushing, your people know their jobs!"

Helping Me Improve My Singing

"Singing Exercises For Dummies," with CD is actually helping me improve the sound of my singing. I used to be a pretty darn good singer when I was a teenager. But, my vocal ability has gotten quite rusty over the years. To the point where some friends have requested that I not sing if they aren't rolling their eyes and shaking their head. A few years ago I recorded myself singing so hear what I sounded like. Not very good. Quite bad to be honest with you.

What the heck happened? Where did my voice go? Maybe my ex got it in the divorce settlement. I knew I should have read the legal document a little closer before signing it!

Since doing the exercises with this book and CD I've begun to notice less annoyance from my friends when I sing along with the music playing on the stereo. I recently made another recording of myself singing and can definitely hear improvement.

I'm continuing to work with the exercises in the book and the CD. While I'm not shooting for a recording contract I am shooting for a vocal sound I enjoy singing with that won't annoy people.

Lots of specific tips -- for less than the price of a private lesson

So you've been singing along with the car radio for years and still can't quite get it right??? Or you want to snag the lead in the community theater's summer production of Oklahoma? Perhaps this book will help. There is lots and lots and lots of information here, all for less than the cost of a single private singing lesson. And the book is not just for dummies. In fact, I'm not sure it is for dummies at all. I would definitely say it is for folks with some, even quite a bit, of music knowledge, someone who has been singing for a while. I've been singing in a women's chorus for several years. Our director is a music educator who takes every opportunity to teach us tricks for improving our performance. And although the warm ups and breathing exercises in here were somewhat familiar, the vast majority of the information was very new to me!

The author has a doctorate in music and plenty of classical, opera, and musical theater performance experience. The information in the book ranges from the most simple music theory to the highly complicated. There's something for everyone, but frankly, I think the book might be a bit too technical for a casual singer who just wants to get a little better.

I found the chapters on shaping the tongue and lips for vowels and on articulating consonants accurately to be particularly challenging -- I wasn't quite sure what the author was saying half the time -- ("Singing the voiced J and unvoiced CH requires you to pucker your lips, place the tongue on the roof of your mouth to create a seal, and then release the seal to allow air to flow over the tip of the tongue") -- although no fault to the author; it is no doubt difficult to describe how we make different sounds. I was thrilled to get past the vowels and consonants and into the much simpler (at least for me) sections on rhythm and dynamics. The interval section was fun -- and I do think it will be extremely helpful in sight-reading and singing to master it. Love the "Singing All the Intervals" practice piece and other practice tips. The chapter on belting (which the author defines as "a combination of forward resonance and a mix of registers") was also WAY over my head. Maybe someday it will make sense to me.

Admittedly, I haven't worked through ALL of the exercises yet -- I've just kind of picked through parts that I understand and I think are doable. I suppose one could work through the entire book, like a coursebook, but I prefer to pick around. The book is really quite densely packed with information, and I think it will be something to go back to time and time again as I try to figure out specific singing challenges. I think if you really, really wanted to understand everything in the book and ensure you were applying it correctly, it would be helpful to have a little in-person guidance from a trained vocal coach along the way.

There is plenty of substantive content, but I do have a gripe about the presentation. The book is a large format (8.5" by 11") and printed on very flimsy newsprint. For something that will be used as a reference book -- you're not going to learn by singing through the exercises once -- rather than raced through like a romance novel -- this is disappointing.

This book has many of the same exercises my singing teacher introduced to me. I'm happy with the purchase--especially since I'm taking a break from singing lessons. I just wanted a big book of singing exercises and this is it. I like that you can play the piano instead of using the cd.
